When it really comes down to it, it's got to be Sly. That first Rocky movie puts him over the top. With that being said, I'll always have a soft spot for Arnie's chessy one-liners. Plus, he was "it" when I started lifting.

Stallone - the first Rocky and First Blood are better than anything Schwarzenegger has done, although that is also partly attributable to them being from an earlier era, before things became empty and vacuous in the mid-80s a la Commando and Rambo: First Blood Part II.

I think it would be fair to say that Stallone is objectively a better actor?

    Thanks for the info !

I did not mean this as a slight to Sly.

Stallone is the more interesting character in film and in person. I'd like to see him just slim down and do some more 'normal' every day roles.

Looks good with a beard too!

Arnold and Sly with Franco Columbo, who trained Sly in the eighties for Rocky and Rambo.

Sly is an actor that went into body-building.
Arnold is a body-builder that went into acting.

In the 80's, Arnold had the edge because he would team up with real filmmakers like Cameron, Milius, McTiernan etc.
Sly would crank crap films with yes-men.

However Sly as a director and writer is god.

Plus Arnold cheated with fake CGI body in T3. Fail. Proof.

  15. I can't find one bit of proof that he used a CGI body in Terminator 3, that's very difficult to pull off, even in Terminator 4 they only did it briefly. This picture doesn't prove anything, I have no idea where it is from.

Rocky is classic America cinema at its best. First Blood while not as good is still a classic. The sequels kind of ruined the franchise. Sly is capable of making good movies and did make a few more good ones but we tend to remember his mistakes.

I have seen all of Arnold's films of course for the high entertainment value but Sly is a capable, serious film maker but went for the money instead.

  17. Here is a video of him even training for the movie:

I'm tired of both of 'em. If I ruled the world, I'd banish the both of 'em to some lonely island.

The picture is from T3 shooting behind the scenes. They used a double and CGI Arnie face on him.

If I count up the popcorn movies I enjoy watching over and over again, it's Arnold with T2-T3, Eraser, True Lies. With Sly, the only one I go back to with any frequency is Cliffhanger.

I am a big Arnold fan (his recent infidelities aside, a true shame as his marriage was a Hollywood success story).
    I met him once.

For serious movies and talent (writing and acting) it is Stallone for Rocky and First Blood.

For pure action fun it is Arnold.

Fellow lifters understand that Arnold is truly the king of bodybuilding. He has never lost that standing.

One of his greatest acting achievements is the docudrama "Pumping Iron". Critically acclaimed, it was "reality TV" before it existed. Arnold portrays himself, but really creates the Terminator role on his own for that film. It is very fascinating as he acts the unstoppable teutonic bodybuilding machine. It is well worth your time if you are curious about bodybuilding or art films.

    :agree:

"Pumping Iron" is one of the all-time great cult classics! And really bought that underground culture to the mainstream.

Honestly I found the newest Rambo the most enjoyable of the whole series. Good backstory, and brought mainstream light to the conflict going on in Burma.

I'll pick Stallone here. I hear he's a big Procol Harum fan, so he can't be all bad.

Actually Sly has always been into that after seeing Steve Reeves as Hercules as a young boy.
