Being a Toronto boy with an older brother, I always knew of Rush but didn't pay much attention to them. Then one day, I came home from school, turned on the TV and found the 'Exit Stage Left' concert airing on CBC. I was floored by Xanadu. I was instantly a fan after that.

Saw them this first night on the show, and have loved the band ever since.

I'm glad that a lot of people discovered "Making Time" by The Creation in the film
Rushmore before it got recycled into that appalling 'adult diaper' TV commercial.

Off topic / related, but I was pretty startled to hear The Soft Boys' "I Want To Destroy You" in a Subway sandwich TV ad yesterday. Hopefully Robyn Hitchcock makes some nice coin off of that!

I blinked and missed that one. I'm sure that Hitch can use the dough...oops: unintentional pun.

Tom Petty's first TV appearance? Could be.

The Blasters had 2 songs("Blue Shadows" and "One Bad Stud") on the Streets Of Fire soundtrack(1984). It was my first exposure to The Blasters and, by extension, Dave Alvin.

Not exactly a song in the movie, but Michael Penn from the song "Try" which was on the Boogie Nights DVD.

I was already aware of Warren Zevon, but his performance of "The French Inhaler" on The Larry Sanders Show is what made me really take notice.

The "Singles" film soundtrack. I was already very aware of Pearl Jam, AiC, Smashing Pumpkins, etc, but this soundtrack and film introduced me to Screaming Trees.

This one made a big impression when it appeared in an episode of Homicide: Life on the Street back in the mid-90s:

A Thousand Miles from Nowhere by Dwight Yoakam. A great tune played at the end of a great movie, Red Rock West.

A double from the Lost Boys soundtrack of 1987. Tim Cappello's cover version of The Call's I Still Believe made me a fan of The Call for life.
RIP Michael Been, he was a very talented man.
And the INXS / Jimmy Barnes tune Good Times turned me on to Mr. Jimmy Barnes and in turn Cold Chisel. Still listen to the OST quite often, cool tunes!

Sometime around 1967 I heard great music in a TV commercial. It happened to be Cause I'm a man by The Pretty Things who I had never heard of. It took me years to learn it was them.
