Love the Samsung commercial (Super Bowl ad from 2012) with Justin Hawkins of The Darkness:

  7. Can't find a link right now, but "Quality of Armor" by Guided By Voices was used in a Nissan commercial, no doubt owing to the rousing chorus of "Oh yeah, I'm gonna drive my car..."

"Nobody who does commercials is truly an artist!"

That said, I was stunned when Bob Dylan appeared in a Victoria's Secret Push-Up Bra commercial.

thought (watching the video on the forum) that it might be-wonder if it's true that he watched the movie once with jarmusch, then had him roll it again and just improvised the soundtrack while watching? very stirring stuff!

    cheers,

I've heard Iggy's music in quite a few commercials over the years. Search & Destroy, The Passenger, Lust For Life...I can't recall a single product though.

Buzzcoks 'What Do I Get' in a Toyota commercial.

The Kinks, "I'm Not Like Everybody Else", again, I can't recall the product.

Love it! Breakfast just hasn't been as much fun since the 60's.

This is the one I thought of. I wish Third Man would release this on 7" vinyl.

  22. "Why Can't I Touch It?" was also in a car commercial, may have been Toyota but can't get a link right now.

It must have been at least 10 years ago when Nike (Reebok?) used New Kind of Kick by The Cramps. Unbelievable!

I think it is important to consider that artists often do not have much if any control over what is done with their music.
Those decisions are normally dealt with by the publishers, who are normally 50% owners in songwriter royalties.
Depending on the types of contracts artists have with their publishers as well as their management in general, they may simply not have a say in the matter. Often all they can do is demand their cut of the profit.
In some cases, they can't even do that easily.

On the bright side of this, I distinctly remember Mark Farner doing a public service commercial in the early 70s. It was simply Mark Farners head with him saying something to the effect of "Please do not take hard drugs, they can harm you".
I always admired the guy for doing that. I doubt he got paid for it.
