It used to be Jethro Tull and The Monkees before they went overboard with super deluxe versions.

    Nowadays, Steely Dan/Donald Fagen

Yeah, Ray Davies too. Procol Harum and King Crimson.

Can't think of anyone else except maybe Beatles reissues (do they count?).

Great question! Let me see... I almost never buy box sets, so this list refers to new albums or unreleased old albums; re-issues I usually pass on, but stuff like the new Sgt. Pepper or Pink Floyd's 2-CD The Early Years are a must.

    The Beatles
    Paul McCartney
    Ringo Starr
    George Harrison
Brian Setzer (with and without the orchestra)
    Pink Floyd
    David Gilmour
    Mark Knopfler (and Dire Straits)
    ELO (and Jeff Lynne)
    Gordon Lightfoot
    Harriet
    Johnny Cash (and related)
    Moody Blues
    Paul Simon
    Roy Orbison
    Rush
    Sweet Comfort Band

 Good thing those don't all come out in a year... usually!

As far as other instant buys - when Steven Wilson remixes the XTC catalog, those are immediate purchases, as are/were his Yes remixes through Going For The One and the Tull remixes, Gentle Giant, too...

Fewer and fewer of these artists every year. The 2017 version of this gimmick for me is

Artists whose new releases you STREAM automatically without thinking about it first

I do still buy all the Dylan albums and archival releases.

None these days. But there are still quite a few for whom I will scope out every new release, and if it shows promise I'll take the plunge.
