The follow-up, Nightmare, is even better. Not as catchy, but more "frightening".

I'd like to say New Years Day is U2's only good song, but the truth is every other U2 song sounds exactly like it.

Beat me to it, I was thinking the same thing. Jimmy Loves Mary-Anne is IMO a better song than Brandy, although TBH I have to say it sounds very similar. I had both 45s back in the day, but I would play "Jimmy" more often than "Brandy", maybe just because of how often the latter was played on the radio. Today, you'd be hard pressed to hear "Jimmy" on any oldies stations. I wonder what Eliot Lurie thinks about it?

Two that come to mind where their one great song is so far above the rest of their catalogs that it's as if they sold their souls at the Crossroads for that one magical hit, and in exchange everything else they ever would record was doomed to mediocrity or worse:

    "Two Princes" by Spin Doctors
"Big Girls Don't Cry" by Fergie

No "truly great" songs at all?

    Or many "truly great" songs?

I set a high bar for "truly great" :)
