This thread idea was borrowed-ok-taken from the ICE board. But it's a fun question.

    I'll start: Emmylou Harris (sp?).

Grant, maybe before you order the Poppy Family's Greatest Hits, you might consider picking up one or more of the above. Money better spent IMO.

    Grant,

I'm willing to bet serious money that you've heard a song by The Band called "The Weight". The chorus goes like this:

    "Take a load off Fanny
    Take a load for free
    Take a load off Fanny
And (and) (and) you put the load (you put the load) right on me."

It was in the movie "Easy Rider".

Yeah I find it hard to believe that someone could have missed hearing a song by "The Band" - at the very least I would imagine it hard to miss the aforementioned "The Weight", "The Night they Drove Old Dixie Down" (although I believe the hit version was a cover version), and especially "Up on Cripple Creek" - which I do believe charted as a single for them.

But I guess it could happen. I never heard anything by "Love" until last year, and the only thing I've ever heard by Moby Grape is "Can't Be So Bad". The only reason I've heard that one is because it's on an old vinyl comp I have called "The Rock Machine Turns You On" (what a perfect late 60's album title).

Everyone who performed at the recent Grammies except for Norah Jones, James Taylor, Simon and Garfunkel, Elvis Costello and Bruce Springsteen.

There's an entire world of contemporary material I haven't heard and don't care to (metal, rap, whiny college/alternative), but I'm assured that I might actually like the following artists:

    Tim Buckley
    Jeff Buckley
    Can
    Leonard Cohen
    Coldplay
    Tim Hardin
    New York Dolls
    Radiohead
    Tom Rush
    Matthew Sweet
    Television
    Uncle Tupelo

I only recently heard any Flying Burrito Brothers, Moby Grape, Love or Spirit; Classic Rock radio doesn't play these at all. I remember hearing The Move a long time ago, but haven't seen a decent comp.

I have heard the Band's version of this, but in my mind it is an Aretha Franklin song. Different strokes...

    Iron Maiden....

I was a big heavy metal fan at one time but I still have never heard an IM song ever. They just never received airplay in NY and none of my friends liked them.
We did like Scorpions/ Black Sabbath/ Judas Priest/ Rainbow/ UFO/ BOC etc. but for some reason no one ever played IM as far as I can tell.

Hmmmm, I have the movie, it's one of my favorites, but I just don't recall the song...

It was also featured in "The Big Chill."

Tell ya what, Grant. For a crash course in the Band's music as well as a great concert experience, check out "The Last Waltz." :)

This is what encouraged me to post this thread. A lot of stuff just didn't get played in some regions of the country, like the Band, Moby Grape, and others. But I also have to agree with Ron in that there's a whole mess of rap/hip-hop and college altn that i've never heard, but unlike him, i'd like to hear some.

I don't really download stuff because I have a 56k modem. To download music it takes about 45 min to an hour.

This is a good thread, but we are trusting each other to not be disingenuous. And since there is just so much music out there, I feel that a rider here is to note artists that you have some interest in hearing, maybe because there has been a buzz about them, or (in my case) other forum members have mentioned them.

    So, at the moment ...
    • Matthew Sweet
    • Travis
    • Peter Case
    • Avril Lavigne
    • Groove Armada
    • The Scorpions
    • Gene Harris Trio
    • Oasis

    Regards,
    Geoff

I just don't want to wade through twenty or fifty songs to get to one that I like. I tend to think of rap and college/alternative as similar to disco or punk; that is, pop geared to a specific audience, although on a much larger scale. Artists go platinum, enjoy multi-album careers, eventually release the best-of, and I never hear of them; similar, I suppose, to the invisibility of a British invasion band to a jazz listener, or the disco phenomenon to a Frank Sinatra fan. I'll wait for the inevitable Rhino series (GANSTA MEMOREEZ, and ESPRESSO ANGST & ENNUI LATTE).

I am interested in finding out about a lot of the singer-songwriters in the hip-hop genre, like Jill Scott, Maxwell, Erykah Badu, Res, etc. Who's for real, and who's just got a good video? Unfortunately, I'm in the same boat with a 56K modem, so I don't even bother to pull down the legal samples on retail sites.

There are so many. I saw something on TV last night talking about some artist with platinum album sales whom I'd never heard of and realized, I'm out of touch. Over the hill. Another year older and one day closer to death.

(But on a positive note, I found a record in the mail yesterday; a friend sent me one of Steve/Kevin's CCR LPs! Lovely surprise.)

I've heard some Sandy Denny, but I've never to my knowledge heard anything by Fairport Convention. I gather they're very good. I'm sure one of these days I'll "discover" them!

Everyone has groups/artists that are near and dear, groups/artists that you'd love to turn other people on to. Grant just happened to include a few of those in his list: Gram Parsons, Moby Grape [s/t first] and The Band [first three]. Others that have popped up in other posts include Leonard Cohen and Tim Buckley--both of whose s/t first albums sure are special. [Hmmm. Tough choice: Leonard Cohen or Poppy Family? Leonard Cohen or Poppy Family? Leonard Cohen or Po . . . . :) ]

Arin, all I can say is that if you like Sandy Denny, then you're in for a wonderful "discovery" with Fairport Convention. Their first three albums are excellent ("What Did We Do On Our Holidays", "Unhalfbricking", and "Liege & Lief". There's also "Meet On the Ledge", a good 2-CD retrospective of their "classic years". Of course, after you've caught the English folk-rock bug, you'll be checking out Steeleye Span, Pentangle, etc.

Whenever I hear them mentioned, it always seems to be in praise. Sounds like I should give it a go. Thanks, Jim!
