I recently purchased the Dragonfly Red. It is connected to the USB port of my HP Pavilion laptop and I listen to it through Sennheiser headsets. The sound quality is dramatically improved. I am wondering if adding the Jitterbug would improve my listening experience even more? Does anyone have any thoughts on if this would be a reasonable addition?
For $50 I don't think you can go wrong by giving it a try. I use one on my usb link from my Mac to my amp and think it is doing what it supposed to. The music comes through crisp and clear without any distortions, as far as I can tell. I'm sure there are places you can get one and return if not happy. Music Direct, perhaps?
the jitterbug, from most accounts, actually soften transients and make the sound less transparent. stay away and save your money for a better analog cable or better speakers cables
I had ordered one when I posted the above and it's now arrived so too late.... I use an IPhone 6 with recently purchased Shure SE 846's. It sounds fantastic but from all I'd read, I wasn't realising the potential of those IEM's so I indulged in a Dragonfly Red. My initial reaction to that has been mixed. I haven't noticed anything game changing in the sound quality - it's certainly louder and is more vivid (sounds deeper in the mix are more pronounced) but for all that, it sounded harsher to my ears and less warm and smooth than the basic IPhone internal dac setup. Anyway, the jitterbug has helped with that issue and softened the sharpness of the sound but to my ears in a good way. Still think the dragonfly red/jitterbug is a lot to shell out for with little appreciable material change in sq from the standard iPhone 6 sound. That said, as I'm locked into Apple and it seems whenever my 6 dies and I'm plunged into the world of IPhones without 3.5mm jacks, I'm assuming the dragonfly (with or without jitterbug) will justify itself as being significantly better than the new standard Apple adapter/dac every model from the IPhone 7 onwards now comes with. Am I right about that? Any thoughts welcome as I'm all a bit new to this audio tech specialist stuff.
Oh yes....tweaks! You wont know how some of these tweaks perform until you try them in your system. That don't work the same way in all systems/configurations.
I have one. I use it for the power USB to HRT istream dac. Some improvements, but not a night and day difference.
The issue with your Dragonfly is that the USB is also providing the power and hence the probable distortion. (From what I've read this is system dependent). It's for this reason that I use a DAC/Amp with it's own AC power supply so the only thing coming from the USB connection at the back of my iMac is a direct digital stream into my DAC/Amp.
