Funny, I was recommending the Cardas Test LP yesterday, mastered by one Stan Ricker. Lovely coincidence.
One more example from the great collaborations of Isao Takahata and Michio Mamiya. Watch Takahata gave the character the way a real player moves his arms and hands. Just amazing!
just did a choral piece, a piece for cello and piano, a piece for 2 pianos called Pelogjam and something called Eventide-don't know if they've been performed yet.
Time for some Solo organ from John Zorn. Recorded at St. Paul's Chapel in NYC. A nice "audio verite'" aesthetic, and a great workout for the loudspeakers. Volume II coming soon!
Agreed on the info posting. Zorn is one of the artists that I'm a bit of a "completist" with but man he makes it difficult. I think he's already released 150 albums this year. He's playing less and less and composing more and more. Which is fine with me. You always know, whether you completely dig it or not at first, that some sort of surprise lies within.
I'm not sure where this Zorn project belongs, is it free jazz, experimental improvisation, what? I just know it makes my hair stand on end when I listen to it. Maybe this is what John Coltrane circa Ascension would've sounded like if he wanted to be Led Zeppelin.
Electric Masada is bada$$ed. I'd always thought of it more as Zorn's "electric Miles" period in some ways. This band tears it up live! We get into all these "great guitarist" battles, check out Marc Ribot's work with this band.
I have several related favorites, but I'm not all of them (or any of them) qualify as Avante-Garde: Fat32 Grails Kayo Dot Natural Snow Buildings Secret Chiefs 3
Agreed what zphage said. Besides, I think most people outside this thread would consider those a bit "avant" or at least "difficult". I dig Grails and Emil Amos their drummer is in OM now.
Saw Hamid, Brotzmann, and Adasiewicz together at the Winter Jazz Fest, NYC, a couple of weeks ago. A very hot ensemble. Have seen Hamid many times with William Parker; those two get into incredible grooves together. Hamid is also killer with Kidd Jordan. Incredible pairing. My only critique of Hamid is that he can be sometimes overwhelming in certain situations, he is such a strong drummer.
Die Like A Dog Trio is touring in late April/early May. And YOU my friend will get to see them again. No West Coast tour...again. When I lived in PA I got to see SO many more shows of this "ilk".
I'm planning on it! I saw Brotz last summer touring with Joe McPhee, then the Winter Fest gig, and now the Die Like a Dog tour. Yeah! You always want to get out and see Brotzmann whenever he's around; kind of unusual for him to be around this much.
No explanation is required for the music of Derek Bailey, and this amazing piece was produced by Aquirax Aida.
