Dave Grohl is a respected rocker, but as a rock star, his public persona is a bit safe - he could make Bono pass for vintage Henry Rollins.
Jack White doesn't have the "average Joe" notoriety that Grohl/Slash/Axl/Amy Winehouse have/had.

I know nothing about Tyler but Jagger and Plant were/ are smart, articulate, aristocratic in my mind. Similarly I'd vote Bono as an undeniable (bono-fide) rockstar in operation today. Axle lacked aura. Maybe I'm a royalist in have high standards for my rockstars. I like to be a little wide-eyed.

He had a going for a few years, at most. Bob Dylan has been getting the job done for over 50 years!

Yes - Rock n roll with bandanas, flamboyance and glam died out mainstream with Grunge putting this to bed. (Metallica even had to cut their hair to stop looking dated). Although there are Rock stars out there anew with their own approach, Axl is probably the last high profile Rockstar of this particular genre to appear. (just saying :D).

Geddy's still out there, and in Mid-Tour. Safe perhaps, but Rockin' Sunglasses & Hair... check.
Maynard maybe? Certainly has the mystique factor.

    Marilyn Manson perhaps?

He's controversial for sure, so he's hardly "safe". Exciting? I guess in his own way. He's definitely got a way with the ladies (or did). He post dates Axl though his relevancy these days is about on par with Axl.

Scott Weiland...love him or hate him he makes all the other so called "rock stars" look like the Osmonds. Dude lives on the edge, all the time, even as he ages.

The minute "rock stars" started coming with the conventional rock star costume and poses, it wasn't rock anymore. It is parody.
Rock was about music. Image was the small part of it. With those being mentioned in this thread, image is nearly the whole ball of wax.

That's depends on the chronology. Bono both predates and outlasted Axl as a true star.

Who is that ? Scott Weiland?

Why does the self destructive element have to be present? Even some of the OP examples don't fit in that case. Neither Plant nor Jagger were particularly "wild" or destructive individuals. Neither had serious drug problems, etc. I'd go so far as to say that Plant wasn't even that interesting on stage (much less off it).

Hence, the definition of "rock star" varies and makes Dave Grohl as good a pick as any. He's the focal and present rocker out there these days and, more importantly, he's relevant.

Of course. Jack White, while having a string of gold albums, has never gone platinum, and his most famous song is probably "Seven Nations Army", which, compared to top rock songs of the actual rock era, isn't that well known at all.
