Dallas Taylor (not a proper band member but...) was fired by CSN&Y (by Neil, mainly) while on tour and asked to show how to play the songs to new drummer Johnny Barbata

Allman Brothers founding guitarist Dickey Betts was fired by the band via fax and it was immediately announced that he would be replaced by Jimmy Herring for the Summer 2000 tour.

This doesn't quite count because it was a resignation rather than a termination, but the Steel Dragon post reminded me that Pat Smear left Foo Fighters in the middle of a show, introducing his replacement as he stepped offstage. The handoff occurs at 4:24 in the clip below:

Franz Stahl? He was in Foo Fighters for about two years, which is about how long Smear had been a member before he left in 1997. (Of course, Smear would return several years later, but no one knew that at the time.) A lot of turnover in Foo's early years.

    Use context clues, brah

(What) band member (was) fired, (and) replaced within days(?)

It fits the thread. Though I'd rather it stick to a band sacking a guy and hiring another that they've had their eye on, rather than a mad scramble after someone quit.

Vini Lopez, drummer for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, was fired after a Feb. 12, 1974 show in Lexington, KY (he'd gotten in "a heated argument/scuffle" with the band's road manager before the show). Boom Carter apparently was tapped to replace Lopez within 2 days. In a phone call Feb. 14 to the Student Union Concert Board at the University of Toledo (site of the next scheduled concert on Feb. 15), Springsteen's manager reported that there had been "a sudden, unforeseen departure" of the group's drummer and that, while a new drummer had already been selected, the band would need to rehearse with him before playing any shows. A week later, on Feb. 23, the group resumed concerts.

Skip Spence was fired from the Jefferson Airplane and actually taught his replacement (Spencer Dryden) the drum parts. What a guy!

There's even a festival show out there with John Martyr on drums and Andy Ward on percussion despite Ward having been sacked as drummer.

I saw that weird hybrid group consisting of Jeff Beck, Tench, Middleton, Bogart and Appice at the Hollywood Palladium in 1972.

Most bands, I'd have thought, address turnover issues pretty swiftly. Usually the firing and hiring is done before anything is made public, and if not then the band should have some idea of who they can tap to step in to the vacant role.

I don't quite get why this is considered unusual? What am I missing?

I remember you mentioning that. That Palladium show was a good one, certainly one of the more memorable shows with Bogert and Appice. It must have been something to see Beck back then.
