Any other people from famous bands who wrote "outside" material for commercial purposes?

    Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo) certainly qualifies.

Lots of TV, movie, and video game music.

    Also Danny Elfman (Oingo Boingo).

Barry Manilow. There's a medley on his first live album of some of the jingles & themes he wrote.

Peter Himmelman scored a few seasons of Bones and the Chemical Brothers did the theme.

Bob Mould wrote the theme song for The Daily Show performed by They Might Be Giants. ("Dog on Fire")

Cheap Trick did the theme for The Colbert Report. ("Baby Mumbles")

Jay Ferguson from Spirit has done a lot of TV stuff, and Mike Vickers of Manfred Mann did movie soundtracks. Come to think of it, Mann himself performed in "Venus In Furs" as part of a jazz group. Mike Kamen of the New York Rock & Roll Ensemble went on to many things as many of you know. Then there was Miles Davis doing his thing, and this reply just got a lot longer as more stuff comes to me...

Rice Krispies 1964 jingle by those outlaws The Rolling Stones who were clearly better at selling out than The Beatles despite popular opinion.
In their defence it's credited (musically) to Brian Jones and it seriously rocks - should have been on their first album.
When Eric Clapton made reference to Cream doing a Falstaff Beer Commercial and praised the Stones for not selling out I guess he'd never heard their Rice Krispies jingle.
It's on youtube Eric and you're wrong, they sold out before they'd barely even started.

Dr. John: "My Opinionation", the theme for the early-1990s television sitcom Blossom.
I saw him in concert; he had a band with him. Ergo...

Here's an ad for Beefheart's Lick My Decals Off Baby. I can't imagine it was ever on TV

After his music career failed to take off, Jake Holmes, of Dazed and Confused fame, wrote many jingles, the most famous of which were "Be All That You Can Be" and "I'm A Pepper."

Tom Dawes of the 60s group The Cyrkle (Red Rubber Ball, Turn Down Day, I Wish You Could Be Here) went on to write the Alka-Seltzer jingle "Plop, Plop, Fizz, Fizz" and the original Uncola jingle for 7-Up.
