Plenty of bands have their own original style.
But that doesn't mean that others who they have influenced can't pull off imitating their sound to some extent.
For me, I have never heard anyone sound like The Who.
I think on Come Sail Away by Styx they try too during the musical break.
But overall, vocals, music arrangements and style of playing is more unique to them than any of that is to others.

stereolab are always the first band I think of having a highly idiosyncratic sound.

Had enough recommendations in the past about bands who made music in the same atmosphere/sound, but they were (to my ears) very different...

I've never heard anyone call Styx, or anything they've done, unique.

And before anyone else says it...Black Sabbath. There's a reason virtually every metal band cites them as an influence. Those who say otherwise are liars, or in denial. And y'all probably thought I'd say The Beatles. Well...Might as well as large parts of their output apply to this discussion.

I think he was saying that Styx tried to sound like the Who.

This can be said for the majority of bands who ultimately became *the* ones we looked to for the "next step" in the progression of their genre if not multiple genres. The Who are definitely one of these as were The Stones and Beatles. In the 70's bands like Yes, Chicago (early 70's), Led Zeppelin, Bowie, Tull...these were all bands who had a style and sound all their own. Bands which sounded anything like them much more often than not came along after them resulting from the fact that the "originals" existed in the first place.

Ahhh. Facepalm. For the record, I'm not too knowledgeable about the Who. Regarding Styx, I had an ex who adored them. So I was forced to listen to them.

I agree with Haristar on Sparks.
They effectively defy categorisation, yet nobody sounds like them. Whether you're listening to an album of theirs from the seventies, eighties or from the last fifteen years, it's still unmistakably a Sparks record. You couldn't mistake anyone else for them or indeed mistake them for anyone else.

I've long contended that the harmonies by Alice In Chains are unlike any other I've ever heard.

When I read the title of the thread, there was only one act I was going to go with...and then you mentioned them straight away.

Before or since, there has never been any band that sounds anything like The Who. Totally unique. Probably because nobody can play bass like John Entwistle, nobody can play drums like Keith Moon, and nobody can play rhythm guitar like Pete Townshend.
