Yea, for being so deep into the rock timeline in the mid 90s, for a band to come along as unique as 16 Horsepower right from the start was pretty surprising. Kind of like Morphine in that regard, but maybe even moreso. Another pretty unique band in that time was The Geraldine Fibbers, I guess they did owe some to early Uncle Tupelo, but Carla gave them such a different sound and perspective. And Cul de Sac came out fully formed from the start mixing some Eno and Neu! sounds with a lot of John Fahey guitar worship. Lot of really cool and interesting bands in that time, many didn't get much of an audience, but some of them were very unique. Laika is a band I love from that time too, seemed to be way ahead of their time.

    Yeah, but they don’t really.

Some songs for sure, but 16 Horsepower is more like gothic Americana whereas Wovenhand has become more and more rock edged with punk influences. Different instrumentation, too. That said, Secret South could be a Wovenhand record, so point taken.

Forgot to mention, Ground Zero's Null & Void reminds me of some aspects of Naked City (of course, I exclude Electric Masada, since NC and EM are both Zorn projects).

But post-Steel Wheels is still post-68, which was the cut-off specified.

I know. I really should've specified 68-81. After that, The Stones don't even sound like The Stones. :p

It's a cover of a cover that the Who perfomed 20 years
    earlier?

    The original from 1957

Both covers pretty much keep the structure of the
original. The lyrics are sang in the same cadence
and they replace the piano with guitar.

Among Classic Rock bands, I'd rate the Doors as the most unique sounding. Not many bass-less trios featuring the organ as the primary instrument. And they managed to pull it off without sounding cornball or cheesy.

I'm just blown away that people think Styx sounds like - or is trying to sound like - The Who.

I haven't read through the 15 pages, but I'd be very surprised if nobody has said The Fall.
