Also considering adding KC & The Sunshine Band. The recent bump of the KC & TSB thread got me to thinking that my wife really likes to dance to it, yet I have nothing in the collection. Darryl
Great thread Most have been mentioned already and my bands I should like more than I do are King Crimson - I immediately loved 21st Century Schizoid Man, and a great performance of the latter day Tony Levin fronted band on SNL, but can't crack this one beyond that. Jefferson Airplane - I love everything about Somebody To Love, from the rhythm guitar intro and brilliant "When the truth is found to be liiiiiiiiiies" opening and Jorma's guitar throughout. I also like the Volunteers song, but can't get any further. Go Betweens - Jay has told me I should be trying harder with this Australian John and Paul, but does nothing for me. Little Feat - no connection for me. Jethro Tull - I do like the triumvirate of rock classics on Aqualung, but nothing else resonates. Warren Zevon John Hiatt - I'll put these two together, and while I can appreciate some good songwriting, the performances have never made it for me. Grateful Dead - I'll add the Dead here as one I recently crossed off this list. A fan recently gave me the right perspective. First, the studio versions are only a blueprint for what the songs become in the communal live setting. Second, you must listen from a female perspective.
Bruce Springsteen -- Seems like a decent person as rock stars go, but could never appreciate his actual music Pearl Jam -- Though big fan of Nirvana, Alice In Chains, and Soundgarden
Just to update my possible new additions to my collection. First I'm going to take these one at a time Hollies/CSN (definitely adding these first) These others will possibly be added later. Spinners Gary Glitter KC & The Sunshine Band Just want to do this one step at a time. Right now I'm on a Hollies/CSN kick. I can't stop listening to them. I want to choose the next addition to my collection the same way (if I can). Darryl
Just added KC & The Sunshine Band. Also possibly considering... Tony Orlando/Dawn Gary Glitter Darryl
I've been told I should like Styx but, well, I don't and I was told I would like them because I like me some Kansas now and again.
Willie Nile. I can't get past his voice. He sounds like he's trying way to hard to sound like Dylan or Springsteen. The music just sounds incredibly generic to me.
Do yourself a favor & pick up Madman Across the Water, hell pickup everything through GBYBR! They're brilliant recordings.
Bob Dylan is one. I'm lazy and just listen to his greatest hits but I should explore his music more. My second artist is Billie Holiday. I want to like her, as I like jazz but can't no matter how hard I try.
I'm talking about just the music part. Leaning more towards TO&D, as I only know about 1-2 songs by GG. Darryl
I would think I'd like St. Vincent, but so far I haven't enjoyed anything I've heard. I thought her SNL performance was visually entertaining, but the songs less so.
Tried to get into TO&D, but can't move past a few hits. I am going to try The Kinks again. Used to have this awhile back.... Darryl
I didn't listen to any Zappa for many years and then about ten years ago I got into Hot Rats. Then no Zappa for another ten years when a friend had me listen to a Zappa song he liked. Now six more Zappa albums later. I like Zappa, finally.
The Kinks are great, man! Ray Davies is by far one of the greatest songwriters of his generation, his songs are catchy and have a lot of lyrical depth. If you want to listen to a few of their albums just listen to Face to Face something Else, Village Green Preservation Society, Arthur, and Lola Versus the Powerman.
Adding The Kinks to my collection. For me it's all or nothing. I like the song selection on 'The Ultimate Collection' over 'Essential Kinks' Lola is the studio version & Essential is missing 2 of my fave songs, I Need You & She's Got Everything. I think the live version on Essential comes from the Come Dancing comp. Darryl
