The Beatles never changed their name. This is the same as claiming Bowie changed his name to Ziggy Stardust...

It was when the Beatles recorded their disco works on the Blue Parrot Records label.

If you were joking, I retract my comment. It's impossible to tell around here!

...and yes, I would call any band who was signed to a major label, much less put out two previous indie albums before the major label one, as "established".

Nashville band The Bees renamed as The Silver Seas , probably because there was already a UK band of the same name.
If I'm not mistaken their album "High Society" was first released under Bees and later under Silver Seas.

    Nope.

Soft White Underbelly > Stalk Forrest Group > Blue Oyster Cult. And they weren't in any way established until the first BOC album came out in '72.

They used the SWU name to play club dates in their arena days, but never went back to it.

  12. After one album, ridiculously-named Toronto alt-rock band the Rainbow Butt Monkeys changed their name to the less ridiculous but much vaguer Finger Eleven.

I'm not sure that counts. They were actually pretending to be another (fictitious) band.

The Airplane's singer was Signe Anderson while the Great Society were still gigging.

Heavy Metal Kids (feat. Gary Holton who played Wayne in the UK television comedy Auf Wiedersehen, Pet) later shortened their name to The Kids.

Not an official name change but for a concert in 1970 in Copenhagen, Led Zeppelin was billed as the Nobs. Frau Eva von Zeppelin threatened legal action over use of the name. She hated the cover of the first album.
Promoter Claude Nobs was the inspiration for the temporary moniker.

Didn't Squeeze start out as UK Squeeze? (Sorry if already mentioned. The English Beat/Paul Collins Beat squabble gave a reminder.)

In May 1981 I saw a concert by a band called Discipline (Robert Fripp, Bill Bruford, Adrian Belew & Tony Levin -- all fairly well established at that point I think we can agree), but later in the year, when they released their 'debut' album (also called Discipline), the band name had changed to King Crimson!!

How does Japan's Acid Mothers Temple fit in all this? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acid_Mothers_Temple
