For the Mind Games album, the Plastic Ono Band became the Plastic UFOno Band.

The Bubble Puppy became Damian after "Hot Smoke & Sassafrass," and released an album under that name.

Definitely debatable. If they were established enough to get signed, wouldn't this make them established, regardless? It's all degrees of course, but yes, I would normally qualify being "established" in this case as at least being not only signed to a major label, but having at least one album out before the changing of their name.

My copy (purchased used, but a 360 Sound with all four sides -1A) has the "call them CHICAGO" liner note.

That's why the Cult can be considered a supergroup. Members of three different bands that were going concerns composed their first lineup.

Orchestral manoeuvres in the dark became OMITD and then later OMD after they lost IT.

  9. There's the curious case of Prince --> Symbol --> and back to Prince again . . .

  10. Wasn't there a West Coast band called "Pacific Gas & Electric"? I wonder if they had any legal problems with their name.

Shame, they spent the rest of their careers being confused with the similar Brian Butterfield Blues Band. ;-)

The Go became Conspiracy of Owls for one album before they changed back to The Go for their "Fiesta" album.

  16. That's correct, according to the fine folks at Wikipedia. Like the CTA, they got leaned on by the utility to make some changes or else.

Also, as an aside: what was the deal with the late-'60s/early '70s trendlet of naming bands after companies or public utilities? Chicago Transit Authority, Pacific Gas & Electric, perhaps Tower of Power, 1910 Fruigum Co...

  17. What do you mean, "back"? Once he changes it he stuck with it.

  18. Which, ironically, if I remember correctly from when I lived in California, is what I was instructed to make my utility checks out to.

Man, I've seen like 5 different mentions of the same bands in the 13 pages of this thread. Does anyone read anything or do people just post ignorantly because it's easier

I have a promo 45 credited to Whole Oats, who went by Hall and Oates immediately after and named their first album "Whole Oats". I guess they weren't "established" but they were at least signed and had a single out.

I think we've arrived at the point where names are getting repeated because the posters aren't reading the (admittedly long) thread to see if their ideas are already here. I've seen a few Jefferson Starships too.
