The E Street Band without Danny & Clarence.

I also believe that the departure of David Sancious was significant albeit that is a long time ago now.

The Residents when Jay Clem and John Kennedy left. The post Mole era stuff almost sounds like a different band.

Did Spirit continue to exist after Randy California passed? IMO they weren't the same after Jay Ferguson left.

Muddy Waters' band after Little Walter left. He still had a succession of great harpists--Big Walter, Jr. Wells, Jimmy Cotton--but none of them, fine as they were, measured up to Marion Jacobs.

  13. IIRC, Bowie fired the Ziggy band as he wanted to reinvent himself as the Thin White Duke. I remember reading something along those lines somewhere. Bowie seems to go through bands like nobody's business.

  14. You mean Duane and Berry Oakley. Butch is still very much alive. At least that is what I read on the internet. Wikpedia anyways.

The Spiders were toast after "Pin Ups" in 1973 - Bowie had two albums in between that one and 1976's "Station to Station", which was the "Thin White Duke" era. "Diamond Dogs" and "Young Americans" were Spider-free. ("Pin Ups" didn't feature all of the Spiders either, but the subsequent albums had none.)

I don't know why Bowie booted the Spiders - heck, for all I know, they left him, not vice versa.

Bowie's actually been quite loyal to many musicians over the years. Mike Garson, Earl Slick and Carlos Alomar all played with Bowie on and off since the mid-70s. He's not "changed bands" nearly as much as you might think - while he's not stayed with exactly the same group over the years, he's had a lot of the same musicians...

Don't think anyone's said it yet, but: Byrds without Gene Clark. (And lots of other people).

Guided by Voices without Tobin and the rest of the originals.

The Cowsills after Bill was sacked by their dad.

Strawbs without Dave Cousins (didn't last long, but it happened).

Three Dog Night after the four backup players left.

    Hamhead The Bear From Delaware

    Question:
    1) How do you know their names? They were allways anonymous in the media and press.
    2) Wasn't there a woman in the group at the time? One of the eyeballs on the Eskimo cover has somewhat of a figure.

Yes! They lost me after the Mole trilogy, they never were the same after the death of Phil "Snakefinger" Lithman.

    Here's a few more:
NRBQ after the departure of Al Anderson
Shonen Knife after the departure of Michie Nakatani
The Guess Who the departure of Curt Winter
The Turtles after John Barbata (John Seiter wasn't bad but it dind't sound like the same band)
Mr. T Experience after the departure of Alex and Aaron
Buck Owens & the Buckaroos after the death of Don Rich
Dave Brubeck Quartet after the departure of Paul Desmond

At the time, it didn't phase me that he was leaving. I just thought..well it's just one of them leaving...and the drummer. It's only after the fact that I learned what a vital creative contributor he was.

You mean Berry Oakley, not Butch Trucks. That's "Lynyrd Skynyrd" and the plance crash was in 1977.

I remember thinking the same thing, that if anyone left the least amount of change would be if it was Bill Berry. I still don't know if he was some sort of glue or if their time was just up, but REM was never as strong again after he retired.
