  1. Best example I ever heard of a band member putting a perceived leader in there place was Charlie Watts punching Mick in the face when he referred to Charlie as "his" drummer.

Keyboardist, Andrew Farriss, was the main songwriter. I'm not sure the band had a true "leader", though ...

I think Journey is pretty much led by Neal Schon, as it was from the beginning. Steve Perry is what made them radio ready, though.

If you call David the leader you'll probably incur the wrath of Tina Weymouth.

Meaningless since nobody was paying attention to them after 3 anyway.

I know they reached the top 10 in England with "Don't Ever Change."

The wikipedia quote is this: "Don't ever call me your drummer again. You're my ****ing singer!" I wish he hadn't said the second sentence, because then it just becomes a case of replacing Jagger's hubris with his own.

I always wondered if that incident ever happened. IIRC, it came from a Keith interview, and to be honest, I always feel suspicious of his quotes - especially ones that were anti-Jagger in the period they seemed to totally hate each other.

Not saying it didn't happen, but saying the source doesn't make me confident! :)

Charlie's response struck me as more humourous than hubristic.

Probably with lots of influence from Gregg Rolie and Jonathan Cain in their respective eras though (not to bring in Steve Perry).

Yes, especially from Greg, and it was Jonathan and Steve that came up with some of the biggest songs. There's a great Perry interview on YouTube from a couple of years back where he talks about the band for an hour.

Although Bon Scott may have been the band's "star", I always regarded the Young Bros as being its true leaders.

Vince Clarke was the undisputed leader of Depeche Mode for exactly one album, their first. Wrote all the tunes, defined their sound. Then he left to form Yaz. It took DM and Martin Gore a couple of subsequent albums before they found their new sound and identity, which had nothing to do with the Clarke incarnation. In hindsight, it's hard to believe Depeche Mode were ever NOT Martin Gore's vehicle for his particular brand of guilt-laden gothic synth-pop, but the situation is similar to, say, Ric Ocasek leaving The Cars after their debut album and Greg Hawkes stepping in to turn them into some sort of American version of New Order or something.

After Rolie left and up until he was fired, Herbie Herbert was running the group with Neal. I heard he was a part owner in the band.

That's what I thought too - when I started seeing posters advertising a tour the were on what must be a good few years ago now. Derek 'The Draw' Hussy is on vocals these days.

  23. Has Slade recorded anything since Noddy Holder decided he'd been there done that?

Virtually everything was written by Holder and Jim Lea so I would say Noddy was incredibly important, and then some.

  24. And unlike The Monkees, Archie, Jughead, Reggie, Betty, Veronica and Hot Dog couldn't fight back.
