Yeah, you have very good point there. I should amend what I said and specify single CD compilations.

It was real frustating when I went out to buy my first Orbison CD, because besides the Rhino "18 Greatest Hits" and the "20 All-time Greatest Hits," there were something like a dozen different other CD's to choose from, including several rerecorded collections, a "Very Best Of" from Orbison's own company, two CD's that basically covered different halves of the "20 All-time Greatest Hits," etc. It's time to thin out the herd!

Burl Ives has countless compilations of his hits as well but in this case it seems like each time you get a copy of "Lavender Blue," "A Little Bitty Tear," "Funny Way of Laughin'," "Call Me Mr. In Between," "Big Rock Candy Mountain," etc. you get songs that were hits but are rarely compiled such as most notably the country-pop classic "Mary Ann Regrets" and his cover of "Wild Side of Life." Some of the reissues out there worth checking out include (outside of hits collections such as Greatest Hits, the Time-Life 2 CD set, the Reader's Digest 4 CD set, the Millennium Collection, etc.) include Burl Ives Sings Little White Duck and Other Childrens Favorites, A Twinkle In Your Eye (a great companion to "Little White Duck"although it duplicates many of the same songs as on this set but you get 6 additional songs), Wayfaring Stranger, Return of The Wayfaring Stranger (yes both are essential purchases), the Bear Family box if you can afford it, a collection of his hymn work, Chim Chim Cheree and Other Childrens Favorites, the Bear Family box that is if you can afford it which I can't, and many others.

John Denver has at least 20 greatest hits releases including imports. Don't get me wrong though, I love his music.

I'm afraid you are wrong, Guy. The Yardbirds ONLY did greatest hits compiliations. That's ALL I ever see around here - vinyl and CD.

    :p

    Queen.

I am a fan, yet four greatest hits compilations (Queen GH1, GH2, GH1&2, GH3), Queen Rocks (another GH), a box set Crown Jewels and three live LPs (Live Killers, Live Magic, Live at Wembley) could be a bit too much redundancy. Don't forget the large number of interview disks from Queen and each Queen member, too.

Did the Five Man Electric Band ever release a greatest hits compilation? How about Shaq? Kobe?

I saw a Kobe compilation at my local CD Warehouse.

Jimmy Buffett has many compilations and reissues of his Barnaby material with the definitive reissues probably being the Varese Sarabande reissues of the original albums with the original artwork (there are Laserlight comps, Madacy comps, the Margaritaville label Before The Beach, the OOP 2 LP Before The Salt comp, etc.) and these comps of his MCA recordings:
    Songs You Know By Heart
Boats, Beaches, Bars & Ballads boxed set
    All The Great Hits
    Pirate's Treasure
    Biloxi

Petula Clark has many hits compilations of her Pye/Warner Bros. era material plus a 2 CD compilation on Hip-O spanning her entire career.

Knowing my predilection to buy anything on CD, my co-workers used to ask me if I owned any Shaq CDs. I always joked, "No, I'm waiting for his greatest hits CD." Well, guess what! They made one. I bought it.

    Yes! A couple of examples:

    1. Luther Vandross--"Greatest Hits" from about three years ago left out "Til My Baby Comes Home." It was included on "Ultimate" last year.

    2. Bobby Bland--"Greatest Hits Vol. 1--The Duke Recordings" omits "Ain't Nothin' You Can Do," his biggest pop hit.

    3. Creedence "Chronicle"--It's always bothered me that it doesn't include "Born on the Bayou" (I know, it's not a big hit single). But then, of course, I'd never consider buying "Chronicle 2."

    4. Van Morrison--"Best" leaves off "Into the Mystic," not a single but one of his most essential tracks.

    5. War--"Best of and More, Vol. 1" excludes "The World is a Ghetto." Thankfully, the newer "Grooves & Messages" rectifies that.

There is also Jump Back by The Rolling Stones. The Beatles issued many comps
over the years as well as we all know (many of the US versions of the albums feel more
like GH albums than actual albums to some people) plus many actual hits comps.
