I love the Dead, but can't abide any and all jambands
    Prince
    Jimi Hendrix
    Frank Zappa

I realize that, for the last 3 at least, I'm the problem, not the artist. I won't deny their greatness, I just never warmed up to them at all.

    No. Can't think of any.

I think 'taste in music' is probably indefinable and cannot be turned into a rule. I suspect that for every 100 bands who do X, there is just one good band – from a personal 'taste' perspective.

I'm the opposite. Love bands, hate genres. :)

Love Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Fiona Apple. Joanna Newsom is nails on a blackboard.

Love indie folk. The only Sufjan Stevens album I can abide is Love Your Rabbit. His reviled electronic album.

Jack White is another. Great guy, like his style, very interested in his idea about relaunching old blues etc, but when I listen to his records it just sounds like a another bloke in a garage trying out his new guitar.

I have extensive (frankly huge) collections of The Who, The Pretty Things, The James Gang/Joe Walsh solo, The Small Faces/Faces, The Kinks, The Move/Roy Wood solo, Steppenwolf, The Yardbirds, Badfinger, The Hollies, The Beatles, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, etc. But I have exactly 4 Stones albums. It's Jagger's vocals.
And I have very large collections of Procol Harum, The Strawbs, King Crimson, Genesis, Caravan, Camel, Renaissance, Mike & Sally Oldfield, etc. But I only have a 4 CD best of box from Yes (a gift) which I rarely listen to. It's Anderson's vocals mainly, but I honestly never liked anything beyond The Yes Album and Fragile.

I was really deep into Yes back in the 70s - 80s but never cared for other prog groups much, such as Genesis, Marillion, Rush, ELP, etc. Just Yes. Why? I dunno.

I would agree. My thoughts, too.

I just couldn’t think of a band I ought to like.

I would think that both The Replacements and Husker Du would have been right in my wheel house both in style and generationally (so to speak - my age group). But I haven't really gotten into either.

That said I have Flip Your Wig and Pleased to Meet Me - so perhaps I am working my way backwards.

  17. There are bands I like and bands I don't like. Bands I should like is a foreign concept to me.

Love Genesis but Yes and Jethro Tull leave me cold.

Love Husker Du, but can't stand the Foo Fighters (or most '90s alternative).

Love Martha Reeves, but Aretha just doesn't do it for me.

I enjoy most British Invasion-era acts, but not The Hollies, for some reason.

People tell me that since I love the Grateful Dead, and like Phish, the Allmans, etc, that I should like Santana. And I think he is a great player with great tone. But I just could never get into him/them at all.

I once felt this way about the band too - derivative, and lots of rehashing of the same melodic lines across their songs/albums.

That changed one night at a get-together where there was a “Psych” playlist on in the background - “If Love Is the Drug...” started playing and it just “clicked” for me.

Yes, it’s true that all their stuff more or less sounds like the same basic song, but at least it’s a really cool song!

Perhaps this will work better for you:

Same here. I don't dislike any of them and enjoy a song or two from most of them. But I think Punk put the kibosh on me really getting into Progressive stuff.
