'Picture Book' by The Kinks. The bass is so high in the mix it is like a lead instrument.

The bass line on this Nazareth tune has always caught my attention. It really propels the song.

On the live clips on Youtube they play the song with no bass.
    Find that odd.
The bass adds so much too the song.

What a fun song to play, I used to love jamming to this song, the bass was one of my favorite bass runs I played.
Watching this makes me want to drag out my old bass. :)

Does It Really Happen? by Yes. Chris Squire's bass IS that song. I wish I knew how to link a cool video of it here for anyone you hasn't heard it. From the 1980 album Drama.

Wow, I really like that track and the added bonus of horns makes it even better. Great bass too.

Richard Davis on Astral Weeks (Van Morrison) is fantastic, too (listen to "Cyprus Avenue").

    Other jazz bassists:

Paul Chambers, "Syeeda's Song Flute," Giant Steps (Coltrane)
Charlie Haden, "Ramblin'." Change of the Century (Coleman)
Dave Holland, "Conference of the Birds," Conference of the Birds
Ron Carter, "Footprints," Miles Smiles (Davis)

    This is just for starters...

    Some favorite non-jazz bass lines:

    Clash, "Police and Thieves"
Talking Heads, "The Book I Read"
