Well, it's July again and the Proms are with us.

I used to listen live in the UK on FM, and the (analog) transmission was spacious, dynamic and interesting.

The current digital transmissions tend to be multi-microphone mixes of almost CD quality, and have little of the atmosphere or coherence of times past.

This year, there's a parallel feed at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/2913JxRtQl3ZTvw0wz5C4D1/bbc-proms-in-binaural-sound that seems to me to fix some of the problems. Have a go! I'm liking them so far.

There's also a 'high bit rate' feed available to those with Mozilla Firefox only (it uses an audio extension). I'd like to know if that works well - some years ago the BBC did do some 320kbit streams, but they were pretty unreliable back then on DSL at 1.5Mbits.

I have now listened to both, and the binaural mix definitely wins for me.
