I distinctly remember GM at the time of release of the first four in mono stating in a interview that the reason they chose mono for them was because in mono those albums sounded more powerful and dynamic and hit the listener with more punch than if in stereo.

GM had nothing to do with the first four releases.

I've asked this before but does anyone know if the 2009 Beatle digipaks fit into the 1987 CD breadbox?

    I thought as much! :)

GM most certainly had input on those releases at the time of release.

After they had been done, Dan. The next round of releases had more involvement from Sir George.

No. EMI was going to release them in stereo and prior to they asked for his opinion.

I think, from memory, that he said "Mono" and that was his only involvement. So he was involved, but at one decision level only. It's a pity that he wasn't asked to supervise the transfers for those 4 as he was for the rest of the catalogue. Michael Fremer may still have his extensive interview with GM on what happened online somewhere.

I actually have the White Album one. The (LP-sized) liner notes were excellent. Kind of disappointed they didn't incorporate those notes into the standard CD release.

I had spent the early part of the 80s trying to undo what Capitol had done regarding using mono and fake stereo mixes - I wanted true stereo and sought out the product that had the correct stereo mixes. So when it came time for Compact Discs of Beatles music, I was absolutely livid when I got the information that the first four were all in mono. It was like someone threw a brick at me.

On release day, I happened to be down here in Florida on a Disney vacation, visiting a relative in the Tampa area that Tuesday, and we happened into a shopping mall for something or other, so I got to see the record stores with all of their Beatles-on-CD hype. It was all I could do to resist buying those things - but I was adamant - no stereo, no purchase. When HELP! and the next bunch came out in stereo, I began my CD purchases, and then began to backtrack on those first four, but I stuck to my plan of Capitol/EMI not getting a dime from me on those first four - I bough them used, as I found them, one at a time.

I've kept all of them around, and from HELP! on, I think I've saved most of the longboxes too. They even made the move to Florida and reside with all of my other longboxes in a large box tucked away on a shelf somewhere. The CDs reside on my shelves along with the 09s and the Capitols. Here is the hub info on the pressings I have accumulated:

Does anyone know how the 1987 White Album was sold? Was it two separate jewel boxes in a long box or was it a (double Cd jewel box)? Thanks!

Mine is still in mint condition and the stem is still intact. I should have bought more than one.

Also, on the 87 set, there's a few W German Sonopress CD pressings as well.

I got all of the HMV boxes except for the first one with the first 4 CDs. Expensive to buy now, assuming you can find them. Also picked up 2 of the Toshiba boxes. Again missing out on the first one.

I believe initially it was 2 separate jewel cases in a long box, then later in a fat boy double jewel case.

I found a Made in USA by PDO (silver hub) pressing of Abbey Road this weekend while shopping used CDs. How common is this pressing? I’ve never come across one before.
