The mistake the Beatles camp has made is always milking fans like there is no tomorrow -

I became a Beatles fan around age 16. I'm 49. In 33 more years I'll probably be dead... so hurry up with it already

It's not the Beatles "camp" that is writing and releasing these books.

And "Some Fun Tonight" is just terrific! Not the "tedious travelogue of meaningless detail" Lou fears - it's really fascinating stuff and does a better job than anything else I've read in its ability to convey how exhausting life was for the Fabs in those days...

In a way Leeisohn has their same attitude. I can take all the time I want

Ironic the other author with that tendency is named George (RR) Martin

You can fill an entire library with Beatles books that have been hurriedly written and are filled with inaccuracies.

If you want the definitive biography of the Beatles, written by someone who is doing extensive research in order to tell the full story as accurately as possible, then you'll just have to wait. :waiting:

Obviously, I was referring to their substantive recording career, given that we're talking about a book covering their recordings for EMI. ;)

If you include the final 'Beatles' recording session - 3 Jan '70 - it's more like 7.5 years.

actually, the beatles were more than their EMI records......so..1957 to 1970 is their career..

Well if we're all about picking nits here
they were The Quarrymen beginning in 1957 followed by a few short lived permutations until 1960.
So ten years under that (Beatles) name.
If one is thinking in terms of the four gentlemen we all know now as the Beatles (J,P, G and R)
then 7 1/2 years would be the most accurate time frame. (Same as their recording duration.)

So, this nebulous Beatles camp is milking fans by … dragging its feet about releasing a book everyone wants to read now?

Some of you folks have absolutely NO idea what it takes to write books like these. Believe me, Mark Lewisohn spends incredible amounts of time in effort to write the ultimate Beatles books. That he has undertaken a mammoth task like this and basically does it all on his own, is almost impossible, yet he pulls it off, judging from Volume 1.

This should not be thought of as a mere biography, but as a serious work of history. As someone in that field, the amount of work and dedication required just to get enough research is huge. These books cannot be rushed in a few years. It’s likely made more difficult by the fact many of the subjects are still alive, or their spouses are.

I’m confident it’ll be worth the wait.

Brian, George & John + GM eagerly await it. At the time rate vol 3 hits the fan, quite a few of us will have left their mortal.

Agreed, great book. I interviewed the author (Chuck Gunderson) as well (you can find it on my blog). What's even more impressive about those books is that almost all of the memorabilia in the books relating to their US tours is from his personal collection!!

I admit I was surprised how much I enjoyed "Some Fun Tonight". I was reluctant to get it - expensive and of potentially limited interest for the skeptical reasons listed already - but it's really a terrific read.

And all the pix/memorabilia are icing on the cake!

So the hundreds of pages Lewisohn wrote in Volume One was not about the Beatles?

It's 7 years exactly really for the quartet of John Paul George and Ringo.. August 1962 to August 1969.
