Thanks for the report. That's helpfull.

    Would you let me confirm?

The mono mix of "And Your Bird Can Sing" on this set is differ to the UK mono mix, right?
The differences between them are a bit hard to tell, so I ask.

The stereo mix differences are also not so significant.
Are you sure that the mix on the set is the same to the UK mix?

    Thank you very much,

    you're welcome

yes, they are different and it's hard to tell. The most noticeable difference I could hear was the Hi-Hat rhythm startin around 1:05 which is much louder in the US mix.

According to "The Usenet Guide to Beatles Recordings" and what member "slane" has told me here, a unique US stereo mix of the song doesn't exist.

What version of Thank You Girl is used on the mono Beatles Second Album? The UK or the US version with the extra harmonica fills?

    Many thanks for your reply.:)

    Great!

It's a bit surprise to me that they care about such a minor diffrent mix but don't care(?) about
the unique stereo mix of "I'm Only Sleeping".

According to the John Barrett's tape log the US and the UK stereo mixes are different.

US: Edit of RS1 (from tk10) & RS2 (from tk6) - Reel#E60042 (Sent to the USA along with the stereo mixes
    of "Robert" and "Sleeping".)

UK: RS2* - Reel# E60043 (Exists in the EMI vault)
*Probably another RS2 to which was edited for the US mix.

On the US mix the percussion track is slightly louder and the fade is slightly longer than the UK,
    as far as I know.

Hope this might be your help.

Mixes/Sources used on US Albums CDs. (as far as I can detect)

Green= Same basic Mix used on CD as on original LP
Red= Different Mix used on CD

2009= Sourced from 2009 Remasters (Mono & Stereo)
Remix= 1987 Stereo Remix, sourced from 2009 Remasters

    * Folddown of stereo mix used on original mono LP
** Duophonic/Fake Stereo used on original stereo LP
The CDs have replaced the above with true mono and true stereo instead.

US Unique Mixes in bold and underlined (even when they haven't been included on the CDs)

    Hope everyone can understand this!

PS. Any confirmation on the mono mixes of 'You Can't Do That' and 'I'll Be Back' would be welcome. Even though both had unique US mixes, they are very similar to the UK mixes anyway. If the 2009 transfers have been used instead here, then they should theoretically stay perfectly in sync with the versions on the 2009 'A Hard Day's Night' mono CD. Any other corrections/comments welcome. A few of the mixes used on the original LPs are my own interpretations.

This is great, but you are clearly not color blind.
Red and green for me are almost indistinguishable without context.

Thanks, slane. That's great. Sure is a lot of red (especially Help!). By contrast, the 2004 and 2006 Capital Albums CDs would be all green for those 8! (Red doesn't necessarily mean bad though)

Yes, bear in mind that any RED that comes after a song with a * or ** symbol means that a Folddown or Fake Stereo mix has now been replaced with a 'true' mix (which is not really a bad thing).

Many thanks, slane. The only thing I don't quite understand is the entry for Help! U.S. Which of the Beatles stereo tracks on this album are sourced from the '87 remixes? All of them?

Yes, the new CD uses the 1987 stereo remixes (even the title song, with the James Bond intro edited onto it). Of course, the original LP used the 1965 stereo mixes, except for 'Ticket To Ride' which was a Duophonic mix made from the mono.

The original mono LP was a folddown of the stereo LP (even a folddown of the Duophonic 'Ticket To Ride' !?!). For the new CD, the proper mono mixes have been used.

So all the Beatles songs have different mixes on the new CD.

That's also true according to Lewisohn. RS1 was used on Y&T (later versions, 4-track, 8-track, cassette) and UK Revolver. Folks need to remember that their ORIGINAL 1966 Y&T album did NOT have a stereo mix of And Your Bird Can Sing (or I'm Only Sleeping and Dr. Robert). Those mixes were duophonic and of course sound "different" than ANY stereo versions. Ron

Yes they are, and the right channel of the mono's are slightly louder than the left, but I'm told you won't really be able to notice.

    As someone so keenly observed...

Some of the "US" mixes are actually separate stereo or mono mixdowns from 4-track BUT that doesn't mean they are actually different content or mix wise. GM did two consecutive remixes of whatever and simply labeled one "UK" and the next "US" just to just avoid later tape copying and loss of quality.

The US stereo mix for "I'm Only Sleeping" is interesting BUT the UK mix is clearly the better mix because the appearance of the backwards guitar is much better timed. The US mix has the backwards guitar's appearance poorly timed.

The treat for me are the alternate mixes for "Day Tripper" and "We Can Work It Out" which are deliberately different and actually better than the UK versions for a change.

Thank you so much for this! Fantastic info!
It would be interesting to have the full list for A Hard Day's Night and Help included to see where they contain US-specific mixes (I'm aware you explained it for Help)
Now a different question would be: which mixes that are identical in the original US and UK LPs have additional reverb on the original US releases?
But I guess that would require a second list...

As I said, a couple are my own interpretation. I personally don't believe that ISHST is a fold. In either case, the difference would be minimal. Any fold of a 'centre-less' stereo mix is harder to spot (as opposed to, say, the 'Help!' folds).

Only the stereo 'Second Album' had additional Capitol reverb that was totally obvious. Others may have had a slight touch of reverb added, or it could just be the result of extra EQ and compression (which brings the existing reverb out more).

The mono AHDN tracks are accurate on the new CD. The stereo tracks are different, as the LP was never released in true stereo. However, 'I'll Cry Instead' is included in mono to preserve the long edit heard on the original fake-stereo LP.

I was hoping for a historically accurate, competent digital representation of the US albums, such as those included in the Capitol Albums CDs, including A Hard Day's Night, Yesterday And Today, Magical Mystery Tour, Hey Jude, and the US Rarities. Then we could put this behind us, and move on to the the best sounding versions. In 50 years from now, or 500, when original LPs will have all been chewed to oblivion, and original tapes have disintegrated, who will wonder what the original listening experience was? Of course, digital versions won't sound the same as the original, but can be a quality approximation.

For historical purposes, with this release, we get a Hey Jude which is close enough. A Hard Day's Night mono is good, but the (fake) stereo Beatles tracks are still missing. US Magical Mystery Tour and US Rarities doesn't exist in legitimate digital form.

Yesterday And Today mono is good, but the stereo is a debacle. All but 2 tracks can be recreated using some tracks from the 2009 mono box. Except for the 3 duophonic Revolver tracks.

I understand Apple is creating quality merchandise to sell, not to create historical artifacts. I do believe that eventually, the entire catalog will exist in digital form, with all mixes available, allowing the user to choose:
    • Artwork / Sequencing: US, UK, ...
    • Sound: Original, 2009 era, modern remix?
    • System: Mono, Stereo, 5.1
