The letters are from the book "Lennon" by Ray Coleman, my favorite JL biography, worth looking around for.

Glad Cyn kept her letters. Sometimes the jilted ex destroys everything...

This letter is almost burned into Cyn's brain. She almost recites the same letter in the Imagine (WB) movie. So sad.....

    Michael I LOVE WIDE S-T-E-R-E-O!

Just checked my copies of the Two Volume Lennon Set by Ray Coleman which I had autographed in 1985! They were in storage...There they were in John's handwriting...Forgot all about those 2 books! Neato...

Has anyone else noticed that in the first letter there is definitely a song with rhyming lyrics and all, [SHRUG] maybe it's just me?[/SHRUG]

A great read Steve. It's quite interesting to know who "The Man's Name We'll Never Mention" actually was. Please post more if you have them or perhaps a link.:)

Thank you for posting these letters Steve. I've just spent the last 20 minutes reading, re-reading and re-re-reading. I read the Coleman book many years ago and have apparently forgotten about these letters. It's time to revisit that book! Thank you again.

  7. Thanks Steve. Great read. Very nice photos.

Oops! My mistake, but you have to admit...MatrixMan's statement gave zero clarification. My name's not Houdini.

Ed Bishop Incredibly, I'm still here

It's kind of a code. I noticed it at a Beatle con a few years after John was murdered. You never mentioned his killer's name; he was just 'that man'' or 'that(choose expletive of choice)'. Even now fans go out of their way not to ever bring it up, even on the most open Beatle-oriented boards. Like most loners that become psycopaths, their motives are often so oblique and strange they'll never make sense to the rest of us.

Ringo Starr, in a Rolling Stone interview shortly after John's death, coined the phrase I used. I thought that's who was being referred to. Whaddya mean, yer not Houdini?!

Obviously you've never seen the thread in the classifieds where Ben had asked to perform something, just short of a miracle, when I first became a Gort. My reply..."Sure man, I'll just wave my magic Gort wand and.....POOF! Ah, ****! Covered in soot again.":sigh:

A request was made to bump this 2003 thread back to Music Corner from my FAQ. A person wanted to comment on the letters John wrote to Cyn (post # 9)

Here you go! It'll go back to the FAQ in a day or two.

Fascinating to read the letters - especially the first one. Imagine - he had no idea anyone else would ever be interested in that letter over 40 years later.....

It's easy to think we know something about people in the public eye from what we read in newspapers and see on TV. The reality is that we really know nothing about their real lives except that they are just like you and me - with all the same fundamental emotional problems to deal with.

People grow apart - I guess John had simply fallen out of love with Cynthia by '68. John & Yoko seemed to be deeply in love and yet even they needed a "break" in 74. These things happen to couples all over the world - there's no mystery there really.

    Relationships are tough!

From reading Cyn's book, I got the impression it was LSD that split them apart. John started tripping, Cyn tried it but didn't feel comfortable...and John "outgrew" her, continuing his tripping without her.

Now maybe if he didn't take acid, something else would have split them down the road... but the facts, as they stand now, point to his acid excursions as being the primary culprit in splitting them up.

This is an interesting contrast to the Tony Bramwell book I'm currently reading (very slowly, too much so). So far in it, he's painted their relationship as one where the pregnancy (not Cynthia) unwittingly trapped John into marriage at a time when he was hopelessly unprepared to settle down. Then the circumstances of their fame found John sitting around home doing acid and freaking Cynthia out. Not a pretty picture.

Yes, that corresponds to what I've been reading in Bramwell's book.

Cynthia was (and is) a model English lady - regardless of what else went on around her with the other principals in this story, she was never bitter (at least in books & interviews I've seen and read); a true gentlewoman.

They fell out of love, or John fell out of love with her.

He knew he couldn't keep his relationship together with Cyn because he was really in love with Yoko.

There's a great picture somewhere of John and Paul playing an early gig in Liverpool with a brunette Cyn making eyes at Paul. Forget where I saw it, though...
