Although the Blue album was the first Beatles album I ever bought, I tend to spin the Red album more. So, I went with that. These two comps (along with the White Album) were the first three by The Beatles I bought in the fall of 1984. These three albums were ground zero, in terms of kicking off my obsession with the Fab Four.

Blue by a mile. Less corny.

I've never understood why the Red has only 26 tracks instead of 28, ie seven per side, as per the Blue and most of their early albums up to Revolver - particularly as the earlier tracks are generally shorter than the later ones.

I think this would've made a better red album:

    A1 Love Me Do
    A2 Please Please Me
A3 I Saw Her Standing There
    A4 From Me to You
    A5 She Loves You
A6 I Want to Hold Your Hand
    A7 It Won't Be Long
    A8 All My Loving
    B1 A Hard Day's Night
    B2 Can't Buy Me Love
B3 I Should Have Known Better OR And I Love Her
    B4 No Reply
    B5 Eight Days a Week
    B6 I Feel Fine
    B7 Ticket to Ride
B8 You've Got to Hide Your Love Away
    C1 Help!
    C2 Yesterday
    C3 Day Tripper
C4 We Can Work It Out
    C5 Norwegian Wood
    C6 Nowhere Man
    C7 Michelle
    C8 In My Life
    D1 If I Needed Someone
    D2 Paperback Writer
    D3 Rain
    D4 Taxman
    D5 Eleanor Rigby
    D6 Yellow Submarine
D7 Got to Get You Into My Life
    D8 Tomorrow Never Knows

Still well within length and gives George some actual space! Didn't include "Drive My Car" or "Girl" as Rubber Soul is too overrepresented (although did substitute one of these for "If I Needed Someone").

Apologies for triple post above. Wouldn't change anything about 1967-1970 though, perfect compilation

Yes, but the single was released in February 1967, and the songs were recorded for the Sgt. Pepper album.

I would have liked "I Saw Her Standing There" included on the red one too... I also wouldn't have minded if "Twist and Shout" would have been on there too...

No apologies necessary, it's a daily forum glitch thing that happens in the wee hours of the morning. Besides, it was nice reading yer version of '62-'66 in triplicate, some good additions there.

Just on the basis of this poll, it seems pretty well established that '67-'70 is the superior compilation, though there is still some room for improvement there as well. I'd happily sacrifice "The Fool On The Hill", "Old Brown Shoe" (sorry, George), "Octopus' Garden" and "Across The Universe" in favour of a couple more White Album tracks for a kickoff. "Blackbird", definitely, "Dear Prudence" and/or "Happiness Is A Warm Gun" deserve a spot as well. I'd probably toss "Golden Slumbers>Carry That Weight>The End" onto side four too, if we're chucking out "Octopus" and "Universe".

Blue is my vote, perhaps Helter Skelter is not on the album

I love Red, but loses votes for me with the exclusion of Harrison tracks. I would put, in disc 1, Do You Want To Know A Secret, and disc 2, Taxman.

I remember I bought both around 1976/1977 and preferred the Red as I was 11 or 12 at the time...It took a long time for me to warm up to the blue album not until I was a least 15...so more of an age thing. IMO> Still prefer the Red. SQ on the blue suffers from very long sides.

I picked the Blue as the superior compilation. The Red could have accommodated more songs since the tracks were shorter. I would have included a few more songs such as:
    Rain
    I Should Have Known Better
    Here, There and Everywhere
Got to Get You Into My Life
    I Saw Her Standing There

I've never owned or listened to these comps specifically. I got into the Beatles in 2002 and "1" was my comp of choice, outside of the full albums. That being said, if we're talking about which period I prefer, I voted for Red. Beatles for Sale through Rubber Soul is my favorite period for the band. :)

Red. The sheer energy and creativity of the Beatles' early work tends to be underestimated, looked at as a stage on the way to the masterworks that come later.

In reality they are different forms of incredible creativity. I am not a huge fan of the selections on the red album, but I love the period. I love it all. Red and blue. But the energy, melody, harmony. The way they took the world by storm and then just kept changing and making great music that was different from what they had done before. 62-66, when they were a band, that was the time. 67-70 has great music, but less growth, really. By December 66 they were recording Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane .

    Red by a large margin.

    Beatles peaked with Revolver.
