The Inner Groove is a better song than Within You Without You

What is the frequency of the "dog track"?

I've never been able to hear it, though I believe the top of my hearing range is higher than average. I base that on the fact that I have often heard high pitched whines that were annoying to the point of being almost painful, while others around me have barely noticed them. On one occasion I was finishing up late at work and was puzzled by a whining sound that seemed to be coming from downstairs - it turned out to be emanating from someone's computer monitor. I turned it off, and mentioned it next morning. Apparently no one else had noticed the noise.

No it's not. Within You Without You is more cosmic.

I'd much rather it didn't fade - 'nature' never intended it to fade. On my needledrops of the mono album and the 2017 stereo remix I have it end abruptly after about five revolutions - that's slightly longer than it might run if I had to get up from my chair and lift the tone arm.

The '17 mono cd doesn't repeat it at all.

I actually would like it better if it sounded like the vinyl. It repeats for about a half dozen times and you hear a little needle slip as if the stylus is lifted off the album.

I think it should loop until the CD runs out of space. Let me decide when to turn it off.

That is a characteristic of your semi automatic turntable. On a manual turntable it will play until the motor burns out or there is a black out.

or until a large circular hole is carved in the centre of the record.

I've always thought the only place Within You Without You would fit in is a hippie funeral.

The dog whistle at the end of Sergeant Pepper is a "Pet Sound". I'm surprised more people did not get that joke.

Didn't most record players have auto-return anyway?

Right, so what most people heard on record was equivalent to the 'CD repeat a couple times then fade'. So really, isn't that the most authentic recreation?

It wouldn't fade anyway. But you make a reasonable point. I honestly don't know what the share of truly manual turntables was at that point. Probably more high end stereo units were manual, so it makes sense that they did the run out only once in the 2017 mono version.

I reckon it depends on what you got used to hearing @rrbbkk, I grew up with the UK original mono LP and at first though what the feck is that when the inner groove kicked in. That is how Sgt Pepper ends for me and it would be simply weird if I was to play the album and it ended with the piano chorrrrrrrrrrrrrrd and then nothing. In fact I didn't know until reading this thread that it was omitted on the US CD, so thanks for the thread @Rfreeman.

Around 15 kHz, about the same as the flyback transformer in an old crt television.

Possibly the computer monitor you could hear was somewhat lower, toward 10 kHz.

    A little next morning analysis.
    As of this time:

22.8% wish there was none (13.2%) to less (9.6%) of it
34.7% love it just the way it is
42.5% wish there were as much as possible (33.5%) or at least more (9%) of it.

Overall, we seem to not have gotten enough of this track, though the plurality give Apple their nod of approval.

I like it the way it sounds on the CD. Seems fine to me.

I have both. I just think it would be cool to have a slight needle blip on it.

I hate that it fades out on the CD, but I think the length they leave it for is all right.

Where's the option for "as was done on CD but ends sharply"?

The 2017 remix of Within You and Without You made me like the song.
However, the inner groove needs a new mix. Maybe some reverb.
