IMO they need a collection that contains both their US and UK hits rather that focusing on one chart's or the other's.

For my Bee Gees comp. I'm thinking about doing label sets.
The first one will all their pre- RSO material (ATCO in US).
I have enough material for 2 CDS (but may exp[and it to 3 CDs).

Interesting selections Daryl - almost looks like you chose a-sides/b-sides together. Some really nice deep cuts.

But how could you leave off the title track to Horizontal?

I can appreciate the motivation behind this release:

    1) they wanted something to market to coincide with the special.
    2) a re-release is not "fresh"
    3) a single disc is more appealing to the price-conscious masses than a multiple disc compilation or box set.

I can also see Universal releasing a two disc variant of this at some point - again for the masses.

If it succeeds hopefully it will be the impetus for future expanded editions of their catalog.

Honestly I'm surprised by some of the negative comments regarding this compilation. It was pretty much a given that Capitol would issue a hits compilation once they acquired the catalog, and the track list is about as solid as you could hope for in a single disc compilation. I'm just glad they didn't add an outtake or other rarity to entice the hardcore fans to buy a collection that we otherwise don't need. Of course we all would rather see more deluxe editions of the studio albums, but this collection has no bearing on whether or not that will happen.

I also wish people would stop saying this is all Barry's doing. The Bee Gees catalog is controlled by Barry and the estates of Robin and Maurice Gibb. Unless those estates have given Barry carte blanche to decide what is or isn't released, it's a group decision. No different from the Beatles where Yoko and Olivia have an equal vote with Paul and Ringo.

And I doubt that if there were albums that were not reissued when Rhino had the catalog, or put out in expanded editions, that they will be released under the new Capitol deal. It'll probably be mainly comps like this.

I don't see the fact that they're starting with a compilation as a reason to despair, at least not just yet. I would like to see the entire catalog properly liberated too, believe me, but it wouldn't surprise me if this compilation is a test case to see the level of consumer interest that's out there, and in what format.

I am not sure - what would happen to existing physical stock in the Warner warehouses? Would they continue to sell it? If so, at full price or at a discount? Surely it wouldn't be destroyed. What were the inventory levels?

Obviously this would have an impact on any Universal reissue plans. I suspect the used market would also have an impact. In the old days of vinyl, albums were re-pressed because consumers would sometimes wear out a copy and purchase a replacement copy. This doesn't happen with CDs or digital formats. Also way back when, sometimes existing inventory would be purchased by the new label, stickered with new catalog numbers and supplied to distributors. I have never seen that happen with CDs.

Their Greatest Hits: The Record absolutely nailed it in terms of track listing. Unfortunately the sound quality is abysmal - another needlessly compressed Loudness Wars victim. I wish they would have kept the same track listing and just given us a proper mastering.

OK, I was going for an a-sides/b-sides together theme.
I had enough to fit about 2 1/2 discs, but would have to cut a lot of stuff to squeeze it into 2 discs.
I decided to take a different route. Keeping the a-sides/b-sides and adding album tracks.
    Keeping everything chronological.
Not sure if it will be 3 CDs or 4 CDs.
Will try to work on it more this weekend.
I even have a title for it...

The artwork and the reasoning for this compilation have been released. Gotta love both.

Barry's comments reveal the reasoning for the very unexpected track listing.

There is a spirituality about this album and these songs always meant the most to us. So, it is extraordinary that it came together in such a natural way. I chose the songs with the intention of having a chronological order to the whole album, and although there are many other songs, these songs I feel are the songs that Maurice, Robin, and I would be most proud of. These songs represent the path of our lives, moments in time. Moments that will never be forgotten. - Barry Gibb

That explains why their comps are out of print (at least in terms of distributors to indie stores) or ridiculously expensive. So in that regard I'm glad to see it will soon be possible to sell Bee Gees music on CD again. Get the odd inquiry now and again down at the shop.

But in terms of what could have been done instead or the fact that we're still waiting for the re-issue campaign to get back on track after Odessa? Not that impressed. At least just re-issue Trafalgar and Mr. Natural. Too damn expensive!

I recently picked up 6 of the Bee Gee's early CD's. Stuff like Mr. Natural, To Whom It May Concern, Cucumber Castle etc. Didn't know much of it outside of the Box Set I have. I am not the biggest fan of this period but I think I will put together the comp that Daryl posted just above just for kicks.

For reference my favorite Bee Gee song is probably For Whom The Bell Tolls.
