Christoph Maria Herbst in the german adaption of The Office was fabulous! Also, I really like the Mary Tyler Moore show, one of the few sitcoms from the 70s that are still watchable today without having witnessed its original broadcast. Runner-ups would be Alan Alda from M*A*S*H and Kelsey Grammer as the one and only Frasier.

Watching Aaron Sorkins Sports Night from beginning to end: Josh Charles and Peter Krause have to constantly play off against other, be allies against their staff, rapidly shift between and-air and off-air personas, and convey both real appreciation and skepticism about professional sports, as well as all the interpersonal drama that runs through a program that veers from comedy to drama in split seconds. While spitting out Sorkins amusing but effusive lines in a way that makes them sound like actual dialogue, and not just memorized verbiage.

BTW, a few transition shots of the NYC skyline in 1998 when it was produced show the World Trade Center. Poignant, especially with the moody transition music.

The entire cast of "Scrubs" should be considered in this (the best sitcom/comedy/drama I've ever
seen, and it was that way for it's entire 8 seasons), but my favorite of the cast would be Sarah Chalke,
a simply remarkable actress. Not only was she hysterical, but she did the drama scenes perfectly.
(Plus, of course, she was easy on the eyes...).

How has Julia Louis-Dreyfus not been mentioned? She holds the record for most Emmy and SAG awards, across 3 different shows. Deservedly so, I might add!

  11. Yes, she is amazing.

I was just about to 'nominate' Julia Louis-Dreyfus! Between Seinfeld and VEEP, she has been nothing but consistently brilliant (I admittedly never saw The New Adventures of Old Christine). She's irresistibly watchable and just amazingly adept from straight-up comedy to more nuanced humor and pathos - the only one imo out of so many worthy candidates to come anywhere near Lucille Ball (who would've probably been my choice otherwise but was not able to take on as broad a range of material simply because of times being what they were - if "Lucy" was still around and out there now? Whoa.)

Eddie Albert in Green Acres was brilliant.

    Cloris Leachman is very underrated.
I saw her in The Last Picture Show and I just thought "Wow...!"
    She was terrific.
Even in Mary Tyler Moore she was great. Her character was (I think) a head of it's time. She was like someone you'd see on The Office. That humor that sort of made you cringe 'cause you felt embarrassed for her/the situation.
I think she's an excellent actress.

Right up there with O'Connor and Stapleton.

Given that Leachman has won multiple Emmys and an Oscar, I'm not sure she counts as "underrated"! :)

One of my earliest TV memories comes from Berry's short-lived 1972 variety show. There was some skit where a guy had to chase another guy over long distances - a situation like trying to deliver a letter than the guy didn't want, or something like that.

Okay, it's not the clearest memory, but it's there! :D

Berry's still alive but he's barely worked since "Mama's Family" ended in 1990 - wonder why?

Jerry Stiller, Estelle Harris, Barney Martin & Liz Sheridan from Seinfeld as Jerry's and George's parents were all outstanding. Comedic geniuses really.

Really? I can't find any indications that he worked on stage in his later years.

IMDB claims he retired - the date listed says 2002...
