Ian Paice. The sound of his Ludwig's on "Fireball" through "Burn" have always been impressive. Credit engineer Martin Birch for capturing the essence of those drums.

I always thought Ian Paice's best studio sound was on Who Do We Think We Are.

I meant to reply to your earlier post along the lines of "Why can't all cymbals sound like this?" And that was just going from the Youtube clip on my laptop! Thanks for the advice about the different editions--I'll be looking into this!

I’m glad you like it. These Japan Jazz recordings were recorded by Mr. Sugano who recorded K. Jarrett’s Sun Bear Conserts. He was active from 1961 to 1983 and left 200+ vinyl and 10+ CDs (i.e. digital recordings). Many of his works were done for his own label, Audio Lab Records.

I love his drum sound on the Brian May stuff, "Business," "Resurrection," etc. It's just so freaking massive.

For it's time, I'll also nominate the drums on the first Boston record, which seem punchier and crisper than most from that era, and sound like they could come from an album recorded years later. It's especially odd considering how awful the drums were on every Boston album after Don't Look Back.

Just been listening to Porcupine Tree-Deadwing vinyl, Gavin Harrisons's drums sound so good!!!!!

I also nominate Phil Collins' drums on You Might Recall.

Everything Frank Beard displays on ZZTOP Dequello is excellence personified...

    The cymbals crash & sing
The snare & hi-hat clear and precise
Bass drum is chest thumping live & everything in between was recorded to perfection...

The re-mastered CD from the box is great but the original custom label LP is staggering in its depth of SQ...

For a live sound Moonie with the Who in 1970 but...

Ian Paice in 1972 with Deep Purple live was no slouch either as was Ralph Molina with NYCH in 1979 & 1991

Extremely honorable mention:Mick Fleetwood live especially when I saw the original FM in 1969 or 1970 can't remember now
