Obviously lots of jazz fans here and few folkies. Her first three albums were never bettered in my opinion "Song To a Seagull"; "Clouds" & "Ladies of The Canyon". Then my faves of her next phase would have to be "Blue". I have never really liked "For The Roses"; "Court & Spark" nor "Hissing..". Next for me but equal to her first 4 but from her Jazz inspired almost at times ambient phase would be "Hejira"; "Chalkmark.." and "Night Ride Home" followed closely by "Turbulent Indigo" and "Taming The Tiger". Best song never on an original studio album is "Urge For Going".. one of the greatest songs of the 20th century!

Blue - it's special. But I love Heijira and Court & Spark. Joni doesn't do 'bad' albums.

Surely 'Blue' takes this one without too much contest?

I agree with the choice, but amongst a half dozen masterpieces it's a tough contest.

Blue is one of my all time favorite albums from any artist.

But she has made a lot of great albums.

Yeah, all those albums are great - hard to choose a favorite. If I had to choose one, it would probably be Blue.

Blue is the album you're going to hear mentioned in virtually every comment, but Joni has had an amazing career of diverse and wonderful albums.

Court and Spark and Hissing of Summer Lawns, in alphabetical order, can't choose between them.

Another vote for "For The Roses" - which oddly seems to get little praise. Being the bridge between "Blue" and "Court & Spark", it captures the shift from the former's ballad introspection to the later's jazzier arrangements. The perfect album in the middle of a genius run IMO.

Easy answer, for me it's "Court & Spark". It's almost a perfect album.

Heijra has always been my favorite, probably on my top 10 all time favorite album list.

  25. Blue. After her first few albums, she changed to a jazz direction, and lost her melodic touch, in my opinion. Plus, the cigarettes began taking a toll on her voice somewhere in there. But I love her early stuff.
