I'm looking for who had the best last song released as a single before calling it a career.

There are many, but mine is "Beat Surrender" by The Jam.

I think other singles were issued after his death, but this is usually thought of as his last single.

When I saw the header for this topic, Beat Surrender immediately came to mind.

Ramones' I Don't Wanna Grow Up/R.A.M.O.N.E.S. ain't bad either, even if both are covers.

The Green Manalishi was released as a single like two months before Peter Green left Fleetwood Mac. So in a way, he ended his career with that song. Pretty haunting tune.

    Me too.

Great final single and segue into Weller's next phase with the Style Council.

Well, I'll go with Get Back. That would be right when considering recorded history, wouldn't it?

He did release solo singles in 1971-72 and 1978-84, but Manalishi definitely ended that part of his career. Went out with a bang...

'Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac' passed into the annals of history at that point, but Peter has released solo albums or as Peter Green Splinter Group mostly on low profile labels at an average of one every two years since.

This thread and it's honest accuracy could be debated on many songs already listed, but since most are listing near final singles, I'll add the following ...

Eric Woolfson (co-founder and often lead vocalist for The Alan Parsons Project), who released the single "Dora", from the album "Freudiana", after The Alan Parsons Project had officially ended, by name. This was never released in the United States, but rather in other countries and I actually own a copy of the 45, so it does exist!

DIANA ROSS & THE SUPREMES- Someday We'll Be Together

Best "last" single hands down before the split. Yes I know the Adantes sang background rather than Mary and Cindy and that it was initially intended as Diana Ross' first single.
