Best: Seeing XTC open for the Police around the time of the "Black Sea"- won't see the electric version XTC live again.

Worst: Seeing the Jam get booed off stage opening for Be Bop Deluxe.

The best show for me has to be 1975 Rush backing up Nazareth on their Razamanaz/Fly By Night tour at the Pacific Coliseum. Honourable mention to Joe Satriani at a club style venue called 86 ST. near Canada Place (1000 max. standing capacity) during Surfing With The Alien era.

The first time I saw R.E.M. was at the San Diego County Fair right after Reckoning came out. Almost no one knew who they were!

I got into XTC way too late! What's up with that paralizing stage fright??

My vote goes for Rainbow in 77... feat. Ritchie Blackmore - Ronnie Dio - Powell - Tony Carey - Jimmy Bain.

    An awesome concert...

WOW!! Keep 'em coming. I love reading about those shows!

While I'm happy to be the age I am now (39), I would like to have been able to experience some of those late 60s/early 70s shows. Some of the people I interview for news stories on the radio like to tell me about seeing Zepplin in a small venue in Pittsburgh or the local restaraunt manager (late 40s/early 50s in age) who grew up in L.A. and saw Hendrix and everyone else at the Forum and Hollywood Bowl. Makes my tongue wag over the shows I missed for being too young!

Somehow seeing some of the bands like Chicago now without Terry Kath, or some of the revivals of bands with only one member of the original group just isn't the same.

    Hi Ron,

Have you been to The Barnes at Wolf Trap? Please note, I'm not talking the 10k person Ampitheatre but the 350 person Barnes.

D.A.R. Constitution Hall has some attributes that don't always produce the best sound, IMO. Next time you are there check out the composition of the interior walls and the reflection they create, sit up in the square corners and listen to the echo they create, and sit beside the high walls on the floor and notice the effect it has upon the sound. I've been to many good shows there (Lou Reed, Robert Cray, John Hiatt, Jerry Garcia, etc.) but I think The Barnes has better sound.

    Just another view,
    Jeffrey

    Hi,

Geez..... though I've tried, I can't answer this question. The best I could do is say the best show I saw of each artist and even then that would be tough. For example, the Grateful Dead may be under the name of The Warlocks at the Hampton Coliseum on 10-9-89 but that would leave out many other great shows such as 11-1-85 in Richmond or the '87, '88, '89 Alpine Valley runs...... oh, I give up :)

Well, I'm in my late 40's and did grow up in the LA area. So I really don't know as I could just pick one show. During the early 70's I used to got to several concerts every month so I got to see just about everyone (Jimi, Doors, Cream (farewell tour '68), Stones ('69 LIB tour). I didn't get to see Janis though. There were lots of good shows after that era too though, Grateful Dead New Years Eve 84/85 jumps to mind. The good thing about some of the 60's 70's shows were the quality of the opening acts. For Cream it was Deep Purple. Doors was Albert King and I think the Burrito Bros. etc...

Keith Richards, X-pensive winos....These guys were slated for the Seattle Arena, I assume they could not sell it out, so they switched venue to a much smaller theater, the Paramount. Kieth and the boys were having a ball!

Want the Best Seats in the House?

Haven't been there, but I'll take your word for it: I would expect a 350-seat venue to have better sound than Constitution Hall! For its size, though, I've always had very good luck with Constitution Hall. I remember that Warner Theater's good too (still open?), and I hear raves about The Birchmere, which is really only a club.

Bad D.C. sound: Lisner Auditorium, Kennedy Center (!), 9:30 Club. And a lot of people I know avoid Nissan Pavilion for bad logistics -- you can't get out of there! Bring your blanket and pillows, 'cause you might as well sleep in the parking lot.
