I discovered this from the year end lists and it's quickly becoming one of my favorites of the year. A lot of sights label it rock, but it doesn't sound very rock to me. It's one of those label defying albums. It has acoustic instruments, pedal steel, sax and violin, but I can only identify the violin while listening. It also has lots of electronics.

The album is excellent. Country, soul, gospel, boogie and rock all rolled up into one.
Sturgill is going to produce her next record.

Right up 'til the end of the year discovering best albums. Quite the therapeutic psychodrama here with sound samples. Cathartic yet musically cohesive. Later I learned the sound samples were actual recordings from the musician's childhood as his parents would interview him. As well, he'd do his own thing with the tape recorder. Those samples are located mostly between songs.

Now that it's 2017 (or will be in 32 minutes), here are my picks:

2016 was a pretty good year. My top five favorite new albums:

#1 - Stranger to Stranger - Paul Simon
Pretty easily my favorite this year. Infectious melodies and lots of hidden things to reward many repeat listens. A strong album all the way through, 5/5. Favorite tracks include "Wristband" and "The Werewolf".

    #2 - Harriet - Harriet
I learned of this talented young UK singer right here, thanks to @Bobby Morrow 's thread about her. This is her debut album, and a great one at that, exploring plenty of different styles. 5/5. Favorite tracks include "Fly" and "Love Will Burn".

    #3 - Kansas - The Prelude Implicit
I wasn't at all interested in a new Kansas album with a different lead singer, etc. But I put this one on for fun and really liked it. The new band sounds good and strong, and Ronnie Platt's vocals fit the group well. A strong album, 4.5/5. Favorites include "Crowded Isolation" and "The Voyage Of Eight Eighteen".

#4 - Van Morrison - Keep Me Singing
My Dad and I got into Van Morrison and started exploring his back catalog this year. When this album came out, I gave it to my Dad for his birthday, and we both enjoyed it very much. A strong album, if a little long. Some stellar standout tracks on this one, 4.5/5. Favorites include "Keep Me Singing" and "Holy Guardian Angel".

    #5 - Mudcrutch - 2
A decent album from Tom Petty and the gang. Several super strong songs, and some not so much. I really didn't expect the fall off so quick on my list, but I guess I'll give this one 3.5/5, but still a good album. Favorites include "Dreams Of Flying" and "Trailer".

All in all, a decent year for new music, and I was able to explore some new artists through their new albums this year as well. A couple albums I have yet to hear that could possibly make it on my list: Michael Buble, Blue Rodeo, and Kris Kristofferson.

    My top three re-issues:

#1 - The Highwaymen - American Outlaws: Live
The team did a stand-out job with this release. Superb sound and video on the remastered concert, and a bonus CD with Farm Aid performances, and best of all, a new track that Willie and Kris finished to make it a Highwaymen song. The only problem is that the packaging is awful, falling apart immediately even with careful use, and two of the discs were even glued-in! The music more than makes up for it though, giving this a 4.5/5.

    #2 - Pink Floyd - Cre/ation: The Early Years
A fantastic 2 disc sampler from the mammoth Pink Floyd box set. We get to hear some great early PF tracks without forking out the big bucks for the box. There was quite a bit here I'd never heard before, and most of it was good. Again, the only problem was the omission of the highly-anticipated unreleased tracks "Vegetable Man" and "Scream Thy Last Scream", which were included on the box set. 4.5/5 for sure.

#3 - The Beatles - Live At The Hollywood Bowl
In my opinion, Giles Martin couldn't have done a better job remixing and remastering this re-release. The only problem is the original recordings were pretty hectic, and are a draining listen. Still good though, and the performances are cooking. 4.5/5.

AAAAaaaand a somewhat late entry grabbed my #1 spot — Whores debut LP Gold is a perfectly executed squall of noisy, angry rock. I'm not sure how a 3 piece makes this much noise.

I'm obsessed with this album, have been listening to it nonstop for the past two weeks.

Labeled post punk but sounds electronic to me. This is really a archival release since it was recorded in 79 and 83. It was way ahead of it's time. If anyone knows of stuff from back then that sounds like this I'd like to know.

I didn't start this one until early February. I guess I'll create another one when I have a few good albums under my belt (still too early for me yet).

Or feel free to start your own if desired, and I'll just join that one.
