Sorry to be predictable but To The Bone by Steven Wilson is walking this for me this year.

Easily.... A 12" came out in 2016, which is the best new music I heard that came out last year.

How did I miss that EMA had a new album out today?
I love the first two albums... Past Life Martyred Saints is one of my top 5 albums of the decade.
    Hope this is as brilliant.

I like what I hear on "I Don't See Them" track.
Isn't the album Crooked Calypso from 2015? Or do I misunderstand?

Yeah. It's not smart to bet against him for delivering the best of the year. :)

I've always been one to let the rugged hands of public opinion sift the wheat from the chaff, which meant discovering 'new' music years after release through indicia of enduring respect like high numerical&star and reviews on places like Amazon or appreciation threads that are frequently bumped over time at sites like SHF.

And there's good reason for passing the buck: due diligence is a trying business. As alluded in prior posts, I've made a real commitment this year to at least sample as much new stuff from divers genres as practically possible, which requires setting aside a little time most days lest the constant flow leaves you hopelessly behind. General experience has taught me that I'm not a 'universe of one' when it comes to any aspect of life, so I know the following axiom is applicable to most of you, too: Only a small - likely infinitesimal (colloquial) - percentage of released music will not only match personal taste, but stick to the point of purchase and incorporation to a sustained listening rotation.

As I said before, I have high hopes for GVF based on the debut EP, but this discovery almost certainly promises the need for expanded shelf space in the "N" section of my collection (the GD is separated chronologically by year (5 shelves), while everything else is divided alphabetically by those little 4x7white plastic cards). Great album title, though, as with many hard rock/metal acts, you might need to look past the arguable silliness of iconography and band name.

Had this been released in 1971, Tom Corniere's wife might now be co-hosting a daytime panel talk show ...

It's a rough listen, she's really gotten into the deep, gnarly noise fields she's always had an affection for, and it sounds pretty despairing. But it still retains the oddball songcraft she's so good at. It grabs hold of you and it sounds like a grower. It's on Spotify if you have that.
Yeah, Past Life... is a great, overlooked album.

I've mentioned this before but Girl Ray - Earl Grey. Terrific debut album in the poppier vein of post-punk for fans of Orange Juice, Josef K, Raincoats, Go-Betweens.

I bought the WAV on Qobuz (and I don't have Spotify), as I couldn't wait to hear it. Not an easy listen, but neither of her other albums were easy to get into either.

Breathalyzer is probably going to be handy when I want to scare the neighbour's kid into going home.
