Really enjoying Shopping's The Official Body. Extremely catchy sounding post-punk - the songs are short and groovy, which I like. Probably my favorite 2018 release so far.
The Silver Seas | Moonlight Road Classic 80’s sound; like a long lost Hall & Oates record but with lush electronic touches and good songs. Very good songs. Daniel Romano | Nerveless Sounds like the Basement Tapes beamed in from a galaxy where Hank Williams played power pop. – Roy Pearl Jonny Greenwood | Phantom Thread OST Classical + = It’s funny how I prefer Jonny’s work over that other group he’s in. Calexico | The Thread That Keeps Us Still Calexico, but with a new, fresh spirit.
My first great album of 2018 is.....from 2017. I'm already behind the eightball. Oh well! Charles Bobuck - Egg Booty
Listening to the new Shadow People from The Limiñanas right now, very cool vintage French Gainsbourg meets fuzzy VU vibe, as usual, all their last few records are pretty great, this one is definitely an early favorite of the new year, vinyl on pre-order ...
All the songs in the middle of the record with featured guests are really good ... Istanbul Is Sleepy (feat. Anton Newcombe) Shadow People (feat. Emmanuelle Seigner) Dimanche (feat. Betrand Belin) The Gift (feat. Peter Hook)
Latest installment in my First Aid Kit - Ruins (2018) saga is that I gave it another listen based on the abundance of lauditory commentary in this thread and found more to like about it this time. On second listen, it is much less "samey" across the tracks and more individuality between the songs started to shine through. So my final roundup of songs that made it into my playlist from Ruins is... 01 Rebel Heart 02 It's a Shame 04 Postcard 07 Distant Star 09 Hem of Her Dress 10 Nothing Has to be True 60% - not bad for not being exactly my cup of tea style-wise. Thanks for inspiring me to give it another listen.
Sounds kind of like the Drowned in Sound review with the same rating, though most reviews seem a little more positive ... Album Review: First Aid Kit - Ruins / Releases / Releases // Drowned In Sound The frustration, though, is that we’ve had glimpses of something more; their surprisingly heavy live shows, with exhilarating classic rock covers thrown in, are a case in point, as is their incendiary delve into gender politics on last year’s single ‘You Are the Problem Here’. The duo have the tools to capture a wider public imagination than they are doing presently, and as lovely as Ruins is without them, First Aid Kit’s lack of edge is beginning to look less like prudent risk aversion and more like self-inflicted damage.
Yeah, that pretty much sums it up for me. They throw in a curse word here or there - seemingly for effect - but there's very little grit or drive. Pleasant enough for what it is, though. The 6 will weave in nicely in shuffle mode on my playlist, but I don't think I'll be coming back to it exclusively. Now I'm interested in tracking down some of those "surprisingly heavy live shows" on YouTube.
Seconded. Absolutely loved this album. And yes, it's like VU 2.0 - but with a French flavor instead of a German one.
I am enjoying the new album by Captain, For Irini, which I guess was actually released in December for download, though the actual physical cd's and lp's have not been shipped yet. I like several of the songs on the new album. To me, the vocals are not produced quite as well as they were on This Is Hazelville with Trevor Horn, but that also could have been an intentional stylistic choice. I also really love their cover of The Lotus Eaters song "The First Picture of You" that is on the new album. Other new albums I've purchased so far this year that I am enjoying are: B.R.M.C. - Wrong Creatures - For some reason this is currently my favorite album by this band - there is something about the sound of it that I like that seems a little different from their previous albums. The Go! Team - Semicircle - I've never really been into this band in the past, but something about the sound of this new record really appeals to me. Tune-Yards - I Can Feel You Creep Into My Private Life - I got the clear vinyl version with an alternate cover, but I've only listened to the free download so far. I liked what I heard, but want to play the actual record soon. Here are the new released I am most anticipating in the next two months: Spector - Ex-Directory ep - I thought this ep was out in January, but hasn't been mentioned at all since the initial announcement in early December Franz Ferdinand - Always Ascending MGMT - Little Dark Age The Wombats - Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life Ride - Tomorrow's Shore ep Superorganism - s/t Preoccupations - New Material The Vaccines - Combat Sports
Yeah it's a bit of a departure - not sure how I'm feeling about it yet. Have it on for a second spin today, wasn't in love with it the first time through...but I haven't really loved an LP by these guys since Baby 81, so....
This is the one for me so far. Raw-yet-tuneful post-punk. RIYL: Gang of Four, Cribs, Savages... Here's the single, the album's "poppiest" tune:
Also, Tune-Yards. And I say that as someone who's always been a little turned off by their records. This one dials down the usual whimsy (rock whimsy: ugh, sez me) and ends up as a great modern pop record. And I never knew what a good singer Merrill Garbus is!
Curious about this one, given the really mixed reviews I've seen. When she's great, she's tremendous. "Water Fountain" was one of my favorite songs of 2014, but everything about this one sounds a little too... I don't know, knowing and precious. Maybe I need to give it a fair crack.
Nice - thanks for the heads up. Some similarities, but not exactly like IDLES who put out my favorite LP last year...not quite the same, but I can see them sharing a bill. Good stuff.
Just listening to this now and enjoying it quite a bit. I don't think I've hear kraut/space rock inspired music that's this catchy before. Lots of fun!
