I saw Grank Funk open for Delaney and Bonnie at Maple Leaf gardens in 1969. Sly was supposed to be the headliner but pulled a no show. Grand Funk was amazing. I saw REO Speedwagon open for Joe Walsh at Massey Hall. They friggin rocked hard. Not the crappy ballad band they became.
Canadian R&B band "Mandala" opened a Murray The Kay Show" in Manhattan around 1968 and they blew me away. They were awesome. I never heard about them again after that day!
Richard Buckner opening for Gillian Welch in Somerville, Massachusetts, 1998. Just him playing guitar on a darkened stage. Performed 7 songs. One of the best half hours of music I've seen live.
Lets see...I saw AC/DC open for KISS back in '77 you know...with Bon Scott and all. I went to see KISS but AC/DC totally blew me away! KISS was a lot of fun too. And....I saw Alice in Chains open for Megadeth and Slayer back in '91 you know...with Layne Staley and all. I went to see Megadeth but Alice in Chains totally blew me away! Megadeth was excellent. Slayer was not.
Terence Trent D'Arby supporting Simply Red 87 ? Dire Straits supporting Elvis Costello 77 ? (There was also a tour around that time featuring Elvis, Ian Dury and Nick Lowe/Dave Edmunds where they rotated the order of play) Bryan Adams supporting Tina Turner - I think he was big with Reckless and her with Private Dancer J Geils Band supporting Stones 81 ? Robert Cray Band supporting Clapton (and I think I saw Stevie Ray Vaughn support him too).
I totally agree. 1982 tour, final concert, Roundhay Park, Leeds, UK. I'm afraid George and his Destroyers blew the Stones out of the water, so to speak.
The Black Crowes opening for the Rolling Stones (London 1995) Loreena McKennitt opening for Mike Oldfield (Hamburg 1993)
10,000 Maniacs opening for the Grateful Dead in Buffalo, NY 1989. I thought it was a bizarre combo and only caught the Maniacs because I wanted to get into the show and get settled due to some...ahem... "influences". I became a bit of a fan after that. *Side note: Oddly enough, shortly thereafter I was hanging out with a Dead cover band. A woman who played keyboards for them ended up playing with Natalie Merchant when she went solo.
Bob Dylan opening for the Grateful Dead 1995. Jerry was on death's door and Bob was near the top of his game. Jools Holland opening for Pete Shelley 1982. Just so entertaining and Shelley was pretty boring. Saw a blues show in 1983. John Lee Hooker closed the show but the undercard was John Hammond Jr., the unknown Robert Cray Band and Willie Dixon (with Sugar Blue who wailed). Patti Smith opening for Bob Dylan 1995. Tom Verlaine came out and played guitar. She later sang "Dark Eyes" with Bob. Lucinda Williams opening for Neil Young & Crazy Horse 2003. Not the best time I saw her but a quality opening act. Iggy Pop and Santana opening for The Rolling Stones in 1981. Iggy did not go over well but, you know, he was Iggy freaking Pop with Clem Burke and Carlos Alomar. Santana were surprisingly good. Carlos played a medley of Led Zep riffs during his set. David Johansen and The Clash opening for the The Who 1982. Johansen did an Animals medley and "Stranded In The Jungle". The Clash were great.
I was at that show. I recall they did a song where Natalie wore some kind of puppet outfit. It was an odd coupling but 10000 Maniacs were local favourites in Buffalo.
Ah HA! That explains the pairing. I always wondered. I vaguely remember that outfit. At first I was convinced that was something only I was seeing
Saw Poster Children open for The Breeders and Imperial Teen in 2002. Stunning. Bassist/vocalist Rose Marshack is amazing-I couldn’t believe how much she moved on stage
Robin Trower, King Crimson and Ten Years After. I came to see Crimson but Trower was mesmerizing. Never cared for TYA, we left as soon as they started up “I’m Going Home”. Gurn city! Still hate that tune.
