definitely ted nugent on what was supposed to be (ha ha) the last KISS farewell tour! nugent was on something fierce that night, and totally blew KISS away, their show was a total bomb! they should have stopped at the previous farewell tour, which was actually their second farewell tour......

a close, and i mean close second, was bob dylan at the marcus ampitheatre, forget what year, id have to pull the ticket, opening for paul simon.

Definitely Rush opening for Nazareth. After catching a 12 minute Neil Peart drum solo somehow Nazareth just didn't measure up.

Neil had just joined the band less than 1 year prior and they had just released Fly By Night. What a memorable show.

Graham Parker opened for Thin Lizzy in Seattle in the late 70s. It was my first chance to see Graham--I had no intention of staying for the headliner. Sure enough, when TL took the stage, it was clear: the best part was over and it was time to go!
Several times I've paid to see some popular acts just to check out the opening band. Before Born To Run hit, Springsteen was scheduled to open for Butterfield in Seattle so I bought tickets. When Bruce cancelled (I suppose about the time he'd decided to stop opening), I pursued a refund. The box office was baffled, but I got my $ back. I would have gone ahead and seen Paul B, but money was tight. Bruce was a necessity, but Paul was a luxury.

Wet Willie opening for the Allman Brothers Band. Two very different styles of "Southern" Rock and Roll, but both great in my opinion.

That must be Queensryche, opening for Dio back in 1983. I'm not sure, but I think they just released their first album, after their first E.P. I had never heard of them at the time, but they blew me away and I've been a fan ever since (yes, also through the nineties, although I dislike a few albums from that period.

I wasn't around then, but that must have been something. I'm sure a lot of people were scratching their heads wondering why the acts weren't reversed. :)

    - AC/DC opening for The Stones
    - Wilco opening for R.E.M.
    - Iron & Wine opening for Calexico
    - The Supremes & The Temptations opening for James Brown (ok, this doesn't really count, since there weren't many - if any - original members left, but the music was quite good)

I saw Queensryche open for Metallica in 1989 on the latter's And Justice For All tour. Queensryche was on their Operation Mindcrime tour, and I did not know the album prior to that concert. They were excellent. I bought the CD the next day. Metallica was, of course, excellent. It was a great show.

No, but what a mismatch. As far as I remember, Hendrix didn't last the tour, they parted ways amicably.
But can you imagine? An audience made up of primarily 13-16 year old girls expecting Last Train To Clarksville and I'm A Believer confronted with Wild Thing? What a hoot...

I forgot The Hives - but I don't know if this counts as we actually went to see them. They were third on the bill and it was their first show in Scotland. I had their first CD as an import and we went to check them out and they were great. We left after them as it was a long trip home.

I'm going to see The Living End in November supporting Less Than Jake. I quite like LTJ so I'll probably stick around for the headliners this time.

Brian Jonestown Massacre supporting BRMC, in 2003/4. They turned me onto a whole new back catalogue and now are one of my favourite bands.

Also, Kaiser Chiefs supporting The Ordinary Boys in 2004. It was apparent that they could make it and yet now I can't stand them, as the tracks just grate on my nerves, but for a first-off listen, they were a good support act, full of energy.

Went to both shows strictly to see the openers, and I wasn't disappointed.

One that comes to mind is the opener for Adrian Belew at the Paradise Boston, must've been 1988. The opener was some band from New York called Living Color. This was a few weeks before Vivid came out, so they were completely unknown to us.

They blew three walls out, then Ade came out and brought down the roof.

    A great night out!
