Best really funny underrated and unwatched show?

The last few years has seen two GREAT shows, nearly on par with a Simpsons-type standard of excellence, that seemingly nobody watched. Those who did and had half a sense of humor were well rewarded.

 

I voted for Andy Richter, mainly because "Get a Life" isn't on the menu.

I didn't want to be subtle. Also, I know some of you guys don't read very well so I typed it really slow.

 

To save on finger wear and tear...

 

"Get a Life" was absolutely hilarious, as was its star, Chris Elliott. There must be something in the genes because his onscreen and real-life father, Bob Elliott (of Bob & Ray fame) was similarly funny and just as overlooked.

 

Andy Richter......absolutely hilarious. Some network has to pick up this show. A curse upon the Fox Network

Loved the bit where he was certain Hitler was working in the office mail room.

Get a Life was a great one. If we're going to go way back into the archives, Police Squad! the TV show was consistently as good as the original Airplane! Too bad Abrahms et. al. couldn't make it work on the big screen. O.J. as Nordberg didn't help.

 

I must admit - I thought The Family Guy was crass and atrocious. Andy Richter I thought was an underappreciated gem.

 

Family Guy! It's first season really doesn't stack up to the amazing show it would become. I like the way they wouldn't let ANYTHING get in the way of a good joke. That George Harrison joke may have been crass but I sure couldn't stop laughing when I saw it. I'm still laughing about it, but I could really see how it would offend a lot of people.

Andy is a very funny guy but his show didn't knock my socks off right away but probably had the potential to develop into something great. I did like that Superman joke.

 

For me, Family Guy has aged pretty well - and when I watch the reruns, the references aren't that old! Seems like it was on longer ago than it was. And when it aired on Fox, I felt like it was pretty mixed, quality-wise, but it seems much better when I catch it on Cartoon Network.

Newsweek had a blurb this week that among males 18-34, Family Guy is getting better ratings than Letterman and Leno. Cartoon Network would like the show's creator to make more episodes, but apparently he's working on another series.

Curse Fox for the way the handled Andy Richter! That was one of the funniest shows I'd seen in a long time. They could make it up to me if they'd release The Tick (the cartoon) on DVD.

Family Guy is a guilty pleasure. It's so over the top, but somehow it doesn't feel forced. And I think Brian may the best TV dog name ever.

Another Fox cancellation. Overlooked probably because it was claymation, but I thought its humor was pretty rich in THE SIMPSONS vein -- that is, the shows worked as sitcoms and parodies -- with the added political humor the Matt Groening show avoids.

This show had some bite to it, from the faceless bureaucrats behind the scatched-up plexiglass of their service window or police cruiser, to the welfare queen who asked when the government was going to get off her back. And I don't think parents were amused that the words of wisdom were usually offered by a homeless crackhead.

Fox cancelled the show after a season or two, when the unaired episodes went to WB. I'm worried this shared ownership may delay any DVD release.

 

Gee guys...no mention of FUTURAMA until now? Wonderful animation, witty, clever scripts, characters that you cared about, unforgiveably haphazard scheduling by FOX...i.e. it didn't stand a chance. Maybe too subtle for the masses. Thank God it lasted as long as it did...bring on Season 2 on DVD!!!

 

Kevin, that's the first show that came to mind when I saw this thread. I was sorry to see that I couldn't "vote" for it.

It was a brilliant satire of Hollywood, but oddly I know of no one else in the Industry who ever watched it. It's too bad it ended up on Fox rather than HBO as it was originally intended - it would have been "hipper to watch" on HBO and it would have been huge.

I have several episodes on tape somewhere, but I'm hoping that this will be out on DVD one of these days.

 

Notice how all the shows mentioned were on Fox? The PJs, Futurama, Andy Richter Controls the Universe, Get A Life, Family Guy . . .

Wouldn't have anything to do with Fox constantly changing the air date and time, so that even fans don't know when their favorite shows are on, would it? "Oh, don't worry -- we make a lot of announcements." That would be helpful if everyone's television was permanently tuned to Fox.

Obviously Fox has the ability to scout out fresh talent; too bad they're determined to kill it with their haphazard, random-sequence-generator scheduling. Add to that their inevitable Sunday night NFL scheduling snafu -- why do they even bother scheduling programming before 7:30 p.m. EST?

 

How about Parker Lewis? It was on Fox too.

Oh yeah, It's A Gary Shandling Show. There again, Fox.

Another favorite was Night Court. I think I developed my sense of humor because of that show.

 

Jamie, do you know if any Tick (cartoons) are out on DVD? (I'm too lazy to look)

 

FOX also got rid of TITUS, which was very funny, and the live-action THE TICK which was just starting to grow on me (bad pilot) when it got canned.

 

Nope, none yet and I haven't heard of any news about them being released. This is why I taped them when it was on Comedy Central. I'd gladly buy the DVDs though.

Maybe they're out in England. I'll have to look. I thought I saw them last time I was there but I could be mistaken.

 

I think Andy is very funny. "Late Night with Conan O'Brian" was definitely a better show with Andy.

"The Family Guy" is my favorite of the Fox cartoons. I hope they release the rest of the series on DVD.
