An employee of mine has caught the high-end bug, after demo-ing a friend's system. He has $1500 to spend on a CD player, amp, two speakers, and cables. While I've advised him that used equipment is probably the way to go, he wanted recommendations on new equipment, especially affordable tube amps. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

(I've already plugged the Grover interconnects.)

    Grover interconnects! :D

    (Sorry....)

He'd get more bang for the buck with used tube equipment. Dynaco is a favourite around here. I can easily pick one up for $900.00 CAD.

I think most - if not all - new tube equipment is made in places like China... I am not sure of the quality.

    But maybe I'm wrong!

    Anyone else?

I may be wrong, but don't low-powered amps force you into vintage or DIY loudspeakers?

And wouldn't that be too much for the uninnitiated? ;-)

I would recommend looking for used vintage gear, but if you must have new recommendations, here they are:

Cd player: Music Hall CD25 $500
Speakers: Jean Marie Reynaud "Twin III" $700
    Amplifier: Arcam A65 $500
Speaker Cable: Analysis Plus Oval 12 $150
    Interconnects: Grover $65

The prices I've listed are slightly above budget, but are not rock bottom either. This is a fair idea of what you would expect to pay if you went to a dealer and asked for a small discount. Of course all of this would be cheaper if you looked to the used market, but then you open up a whole new playing field and there is a ton of great stuff to consider. This would probably be the best "new", small, budget system I could recommend.

Not entirely true Pablo. My Castles are rated at 50 W each and are 92 db and were made in 95. Picked them up used for $250.00 and found out they retailed 2 years prior for $2995.00. :bigeek:

Nice score, Dave! Where did you find Castles that cheap?

In a local, now gone provincial, newspaper called The Buy & Sell. Lots of local equipment for sale, although not so much the last year or so.
