I found this in a CD store. It appears to be remastered: the cover art seems to be a faithful replication of the Lp, including the way it lists the credits. Well, actually, I think it may not be, because the cover photo has flames in the background, and I seem to recall the flames in the background being blacked out on the original Lp.

No bonus tracks or mastering credit.

Is this a keeper, and if not, what is?

Matt, FYI: the initial release had the flames on the cover, but the flames were removed soon after the plain-crash.

The remastered editions have the flames. I have an original MCA CD, and it sounds pretty darn good. It also has the post-plane crash cover (no flames). It's one of those MCA CDs with the pink back cover ;-)

MCA's Ultimate Masterdisk gold edition sounds good too...

Nearly all of the songs from 'Street Survivors' are on a 3-CD box set. It sounds pretty good, mastered by Doug Schwartz, IIRC (another mastering engineer with a German sounding name: schwartz means black);)

That's odd -- I thought the only versions on CD were:

    1) Original CD -- no flames, no bonus tracks
    2) Gold CD
    3) Remastered CD -- flames, bonus tracks.

So I don't recall there being a flame version without bonus tracks. What's the catalog number?

I liked the original cheep-o MCA disc too. Always sounded good to my ears.

I have a UK "flame" vinyl that sounds really good. I have not heard a bad sounding LP/cd of this title. Well recorded (well maybe a bit too much on top) rock recording.

Maybe I'm wrong about the bonus tracks. I can go back and check, but it's starting to sound like the older CD is the way to go.

There was. Don't know the catalog number, but MCA issued an standard aluminum version of the gold disc. Same mastering, but at a regular, lower price.

They did this with several titles including Pronounced Lynyrd Skynyrd and A Decade Of Steely Dan.

If I'm not mistaken, SS came out as both part of the Skynyrd remasters series, and then again as part of the "Expanded Editions" series. That means we have:

    Original CD
    Gold
    Remaster
    Expanded

I personally find the MCA Ultimate Masterdisc to be harsh in general and compressed quite a bit beyond necessary. I'm still looking for the original MCA pressing, as I'm pretty much willing to bet that it sounds much better, due to the lack of processing, like the other original Skynyrd MCA CD's that I own.

Yes, no bonus tracks, probably the silver version of the gold remaster. Kind of unfortunate, because I think this was done my Glenn Meadows, who occasionally de-noises and always EQ's the life out of everything.

I have a Japan OBI version with flames, no bonus tracks and liner notes in both Japanese/English. It doesn't sound too harsh, but it's definitely lacking something compared to the other Skynyrd first releases I have on cd.
