Mine has stamper codes 2 RL and 1 OM, and it was not inexpensive.

EAC is quite simply the best, and most accurate CD ripper out there. IMO. :)

*Any* wave editor that gives you the peak values per track is what you need, but since most people here use EAC as a ripper too, you get 2 for 1.

Forgive my ignorance, but is there any "standard" program I might currently have that could do this? Windows media?

  6. Yes, I use EAC. It's freeware.

'Round these parts, EAC *is* the standard. :righton:

I don't think Windows Media Player will give peak values per track. But any wave editor should be able to. But then you'd probably have to do it track by track, whereas EAC will do the entire CD for you in one shot.

Foobar can give the track peaks as well.

I just passed on a vinyl UK Harvest for $12 - cover worn but the record clean. Did I miss anything special? In general, I have always found Meddle to sound pretty good in every format I've ever heard it on (IMHO - you would really have to try to mess this one up).

My personal reference is the UK EMI 'one box' Gramaphone text, 1U/1U stampers. I prefer this over my US, JPN and MOFI pressings.

I too have a UK LP pressing...it's not an original, but it sounds great, imo.

Have to agree, the MOFI CD made me appreciate the entire album as well, and it beat the pants off my late 70s plain jane US LP. With renewed enthusiasm, I searched out a UK original LP which I prefer, but outside of that I havent heard anything better than the Ultradisc. I would recommend it.

John, you may want to give the Japanese 1st pressing CD [no TO and no CDP catalog number in the matrix] a shot first. This one really put the MFSL in its place at high volumes for me.

I have the USA Columbia pressing and I've never felt the need to search out another version. I'm sure there are differences between this one and the European or MFSL versions, but not enough to persue them.

  16. I second that.

That actual Japan pressing might have some extra magic, but I have a U.S. release with the same mastering. IIRC there were two or more different masterings which appeared on those original U.S. discs, so it can be hit and miss to find it, but if you do it won't cost you too much.

Anyhow, it sounds great to me. I've not yet heard the MFSL though.

I'm not too knowledgeable about this title on vinyl, but I have heard the UK Harvest and thought it was great. Nice dynamic range, very open soundstage. Is it too late to try and get it? $12 isn't much to risk, IMO.

Another vote for the MOFI cd. I love this album and knew the LP intimately before I bought the MOFI cd. I am still very pleased with the sound.

IMO, even the same CD with a CDP number (no TO) in the matrix wins over the MFSL CD, which is Really good. The MFSL LP is another story.

For LPs it's the earliest matrix green label Harvest UK LP you can find.

Any of the black triangle variations beats the MoFi for me at any volume.

I have both a BT and a MFSL and personally for me the MFSL just shades it on my system.

Picked up a copy of this last month; thought I was buying the UK CDP version, but turns out it was the black face Japanese one instead. Sounds fabulous, no issues with this one.

I've been on a major Floyd kick lately, but up until recently the only remastered CD that has replaced stuff I bought some 17 years ago was the 2003 Hybrid/SACD of DSOTM. Otherwise, the U.S. Capitol versions of Meddle, Obscured, WYWH, Animals and Delicate Sound of Thunder that I bought back in 93 are still the ones in my catalog.

These days I have a much better 2 channel rig than I did in '93, so I thought I'd first experiment with a better version of Meddle, as this is a favorite (along with Animals).

So last week I picked up an EMI Made in Japan version of Meddle, but it doesn't seem to match any of the catalogue numbers listed above in this thread. It simply goes by this catalog number: TOCP-53806. Is this different from the Toshiba EMI releases/pressings mentioned above? (I don't see 'Toshiba' written anywhere on the sleeve)

Anyway, I did an A/B comparison with this and the old U.S.Capitol version and I found this Japanese one to be a nice improvement. Just wondering where it might fit into the discussion above, if at all (???)

On the Obi, aside from the listing above (TOCP 53806) and a price of 1980 Yen, it seems to have two issue dates: 06.9.6 (94.8.1), presumably Aug. 1, 1994 and Sept. 6, 2006. That is all the info I can find.
