I'm expecting 4 discs, late '09 release. My expectation (based on who's working on it) is that this will be done RIGHT. Great sound, great packaging, everything fans will want.[/QUOTE]

Thanks Kent; how about the Radio City book? can you tell us when that will be out? Great liner notes on the Van Duren reissue, by the way. I've been looking forward to that CD coming out for years; a favorite of mine.

    Thanks, Tom.

That Van Duren was supposed to have come out on Terry's label two years earlier.

I'm not familiar with a Radio City book. ??

you can check out the 33 1/3 blog, but it was supposed to come out in December. I'm guessing it will probably come out this month or next. Seems to be finished, just awaiting release.

Since Terry's label came up in conversation here, I gotta ask: are any of those Lucky Seven releases still available? Like a chump, I waited too long, and would dearly love to get my mitts on the Rock City and Cargoe releases without having to pay collector prices... On the Lucky 7 website, the most recent web store he had chosen appears to already be defunct.

How could Rhino release this?? Isn't Big Star music controlled by Concord?

I emailed him a while ago to get an album, he says he still has them. E-mail him off the site.

Um, they could license the songs? How did Rhino do it in the old days?

Looks to me like you can still get 'em. http://www.luckysevenrecords.com/

    Thru indie warehouse??

I highly recommend Lucky Seven's releases by Cargoe, Van Duren, and Gimmer Nicholson (a fascinating story, odd guitar instrumental record circa '68 that HEAVILY influenced Chris Bell/Big Star's guitar sound).

Here's a direct link to the blog entry that Imagine the Swan mentioned:

    http://33third.blogspot.com/2008/11/big-stars-radio-city.html

Thanks for the tip-off! This sounds like a fascinating read with Alex getting full reign to directly contribute to his own mythology. John Chilton of Canterbury? Wow. Making Chilton comfortable is near impossible, but if he's opened up enough to talk about his vast family tree then I'm sure that the history lesson will lead to some genuine revelations about the making of Radio City. This will be a milestone for Big Star fans, I'm sure.

I actually just contacted them about getting a copy to review for a site I write for, www.glidemagazine.com (sorry for the plug) and they told me it should be out within the month.

I didn't know Bruce Eaton wrote this. This will be great, I'm sure. Bruce and I had a very close mutual friend who ran great record stores both in Buffalo and Boston so I got to meet and hang out with Bruce. He has had a long relationship with Chilton and Big Star. He knows his stuff, so this should be one fine and illuminating read. I can't wait.

Well, Chilton's participation will no doubt make for interesting reading. I wouldn't say this will mean the "last word" on Big Star. But I'll be reading!

Yes, it might not be entirely factual, but it certainly will be another weird glimpse into the Weird World of Chilton. Besides, Big Star fans take what they can get interview-wise!
