Whilst these setlists are slowly changing, it's not exactly inspiring stuff.

The reintroduction of tracks like Non Fiction is welcome of course, but the band is really treading water on this tour. There is no real deep digging into the catalogue and even the majority of cover versions have been played many times before (and better) by the band on previous tours (Medicated Goo and Hush excepted of course).

I know it takes time, but to my mind, if this particular incarnation of the band was a real ongoing concern for all, then we should be seeing some long ignored gems popping up. It might even eradicate any comparison to previous lead guitarists, as there would be very little to compare against. If the time is taken to rehearse and play Title Song or Feathers, what about Song Of The Flesh or Grinnin'?

Try as they might, no Crowes guitarist can compete with Marc Fords peerless playing on well known material like Sometimes Salvation or Wiser Time. So I suggest they stop playing them as staples.

Imagine a setlist made up of 50% unreleased material. It would be a win-win. The fans would be delighted and even if the band themselves can't write any new tracks, would have something new to play which might actually excite them. There are plenty of options. How about these for starters, all of which are known about and have been played live less than a dozen times over the years (if at all)

    Never Forget This Song
    Grinnin'
    Song Of The Flesh
    Wind and Wood Heart
    Painkiller
    Name Like Music
    Pastoral
    Nothing Love Everything
    Unlikely To Believe
    Bled To Death
    Share My Blanket
    Natural Born Turn It On
    Hole In Your Sole

Of course I may be in the minority, but I reckon a setlist with some unexpected variations, like this, would be much more interesting

    Good Morning Captain
    Gone
    Nebakenezer
My Morning Song -> Pastoral -> My Morning Song
    Hole In Your Sole
    Non Fiction
    Song Of The Flesh
    She Talks To Angels
    Name Like Music
    Thorn In My Pride
    Grinnin'
    Twice As Hard
    Bled To Death
Been A Long Time (Waiting On Love)
    -encore-
    Stare It Cold
    Feelin' Alright

They are starting to nix it up a little more. Getting Jackie acclimated.

  10. No matter what they play, who plays lead or keys, some people will never be satisfied.

Nebakenezer needs to make an appearance on occasion for sure. Three Snakes is a gem of a record.

Good to see Another Roadside Tragedy, Cold Boy Smile and Coming Home in that set, but I think the reason there's so little discussion comes down to the uncharacteristically rigid setlists.

It's pretty obvious that the band is no longer catering to the diehards. While they'll never play a completely stagnant set list, it's clear that they're going to play all of the big hits every night and fill out the set with other well-known tunes and covers.

Jackie's tone fits the sound from the first two albums. The crowds have been loving the shows and the reviews have been positive.

I wrote a long-ass review of the Boston show if you're interested. The bottom line is that they're finally giving the wider audience what they want from the Crowes - a high-energy rock and roll show - even if it pisses off the Amoricans.

Great article Mitch! It nailed a lot of my feelings about what I've read, seen and heard from this tour thus far. I was curious about the lack of the soul sisters but it sounds like they have matters in hand. I was amazed at your O.V. Wright reference. I couldn't believe the comparison but you are correct. I think Chris has gotten much better over the last several years. I can't wait until my show in St. Louis on Friday. I may write a review but it won't be as eloquent as your review and observations. Nice job....

Yes, great review indeed. I went to both London shows a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed both, especially the second night. It's positive that the band isn't afraid of subtle changes to some of their best known material, such as in Jealous Again and Thorn In My Pride.

Back to your review - good to see someone else who loves Adam. The guy is a great musician; I only wish the Brotherhood had come over to the UK.

Yeah, heard that last week. I'd love to get the Record Day 7" but being in the UK unfortunately means that's not going to happen.
