I'm looking for the best possible vinyl version of this masterpiece....

Does anybody own and/or have an opinion on this version:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=889464869

Is the Columbia Half-Speed Mastersound better? Seems to be rare as I can only remember seeing it once or twice on eBay in the past couple of years or so...

    Thanks, Vinyl-meisters!

    Ben,

According to previous threads on this, the opinion seems to be avoid the Mastersound vinyls.

I have a CX encoded version on vinyl and in my opinion it is the best sounding vinyl release out there. When played with my CX decoder it is very quiet and sounds better than the CD. It is expected that it will soon be releasd in remastered form with additional tracks. Bob's new book will be published at about the same time. They are waiting for his little boy's band to release its new album first; later this Summer. Look for a late Fall release (dont' hold your breath, but it might happen).:D

    Hello Ben.

No idea on sonic merits. I only have one copy and almost never do comparisons anyway.

But there's something about the picture in the back. Early pressings have a large drawing that takes the full jacket. I understand later pressings have a reduced image.

It would have been great for Sony to have released Blonde on Blonde in SACD with the original Claudia Cardinale photograph.

    Best regards.

The small rear photo was universal because the liner notes were about the NY Sessions not the released album. Then it won a Grammy and the first rear cover went back on.

As for the Blond on Blond photos that were removed, they lack legal clearance from the subject and that is that. Sundazed just tried to get authority to restore them for the Mono vinyl release and were told to forget it.

Yeah - great article with the President of Sundazed in Stereophile a few issues back...he talked about the Blonde on Blonde photos....

    Try the Analog Productions version!

I have it and the standard Columbia release, the AP is better, a little soft, but over all better.

I have the AP version and I remember it sounding pretty good. I haven't played it in some time...

The interesting thing about the half-speed mastered Blood On The Tracks is that the pitch is correct, that is, as recorded.

Dylan, who produced the album, sped up the songs, ranging from about 1% to 3%, on the original, normal release, presumably because he thought pushing it sounded better.

But when Columbia made the half-speed mastered version, they seem to have not noticed that the tapes were supposed to be played back faster.

So when you hear the half-speed mastered LP, you'll immediately notice the big difference in pitch. The first seven songs range from about 1/3 to 1/2 of a semitone slower. The last three songs weren't changed much.

The Simply Vinyl uses the original back cover for Blood on the Tracks as well. Maybe being from the u.k. they didn't need special clarence.

Joe, it is just some of the Blond on Blond photos that are out of bounds. The first Blood on the Tracks rear cover is now the only one authorized, the replacement rear is now off the market.

    Richard,
What Joe is saying is that the CURRENT Simply Vinyl BoB cover contains ALL the pictures including the lovely Claudia Cardinale pic.

I think you have mixed up Blood with Blonde on Blonde

The original rear cover of Blood had a piece by Pete Hammill and then was replaced by a painting then with a revised Hammill write-up.

    How does the SV sound?

Have had spotty results with that label...very inconsistent....

Of course, they make no bones about source tapes being 2nd or even 3rd generation...if they like the sound, that's what they go with....

No, trust me... If you can't find an early Columbia with the original back tapestry, get the Simply Vinyl. Sounds excellent, and I prefer listening to it than the CD.

I wonder when this will come out on SACD?

I do trust your opinion...heck - you're the guy whose got me cleaning my records in the kitchen sink! (works great, too!)

BTW - where's the best place to score the SV online?

    Thanks,

    Ben

Sundazed is eventually going to release all of Dylan's stuff on LP. So another alternative is to wait for them.

Call Peter and Rick over at RedTrumpet and ask them if they can still get the issue. The cover is fairly delicate, but at least you'll have a CLEAN copy, sounding fairly amazing, with the original back tapestry.

Sundazed has been asked by Bob's management to release all of Bob's mono masters onto vinyl mono disk. I don't believe anything after Blond on Blond was ever mastered with a unique mono mix so I doubt Sundazed will be releasing Blood on the Track on vinyl any time soon. Just got off the phone with Sundazed, Blond on Blond will be out in August.

Well, when it does come out on SACD I sure hope that DESIRE comes out at the same time.

I don't think so Tommy, read the quote again.
BoB is Blonde on Blonde and the Simply Vinyl does have ALL the original pics. Interestingly, my MONO 360 sound BoB does not.

I do know about the back of the Blood on the Tracks covers. I happen to have both covers.

The Simply Vinyl BoB sounds terrific.

The Simply Vinyl Blood on the Tracks cover and LP, I know nothing about.

Actually...the Simply Vinyl is STEREO. The Sundazed will be MONO.

I'm glad, since I'm not the only one who can't live without one for the other. Desire is equally as important.
