Can you provide a link or something? More details? BMG was legit. Victor was (is?) legit. If you are speaking of an older CD or something, this should be the real deal, but in broad terms, I can't say for sure.
Discogs says... 'Japanese record company. In Japanese: BMGビクター株式会社 (mosty credit as 発売元:[Selling Agency:]) BMG Victor, Inc. was established in 1987 after the Bertelsmann Music Group acquired RCA Records. It's a joint-venture with Victor Musical Industries, Inc. The start of the company marked the end of the RVC Corporation. In 1997 the company was renamed to BMG Japan, Inc.' Hope this helps...
well i found a later japanese Pressing of a cd i have a ad out for The Jackson 5 - Anthology not sure how legit it is so thought id ask here
BMG never distributed Motown unless I'm missing something. They were self-run, then owned by Polygram, then owned by Universal. EMI distributed them elsewhere, right? Ed
Interesting info! I only remember EMI distributing Motown. I have a couple of British Temptations things and a Japanese. Both were distributed by EMI. Ed

May be I'm missing the point, but for instance, I have a french (legit, official) CD from 1997, and on the back there's this label info "BMG (big letters) / BMG - France (small letters) / RcaVictor (big letters)"
Not quite sure either. I think he's having an issue seeing it on a Motown disc. Being pressed by JVC and marketed for the Country of Japan it makes sense to have the Logo/Rights printed on the case
BMG Victor is legit, but there's more to it. RCA's former Japanese subsidiary, was called Victor Company of Japan and became separated from RCA during World War II. Victor Company of Japan became known as JVC outside of the US, since only in Japan did they rights to the 'Victor' trademark, but also the His Master's Voice and Nipper logos and did not have it anywhere else. 80s RCA label discs for the Japanese market were usually made by Victor-JVC's CD plant, and lack both the 'Victor' and HMV/Nipper logos that may be present on the US versions. RCA Records was sold by then parent General Electric in 1986, along with HMV/Nipper rights in the countries they had them in (Americas mostly) to print publisher's music business, Bertelesmann Music Group (BMG), which is now part of Sony Music. As is well known Victor-JVC makes both audio/video hardware and is a record label business in Japan, Victor Entertainment. Both were originally begat from RCA's Japanese efforts pre-war. Prior to BMG acquiring RCA Records, RCA Records' music in the Japanese market was manufacturing and distributed by Victor Entertainment through a joint venture, RVC Corporation (RCA-Victor Japan Corp). RVC was renamed BMG Victor after the BMG acquisition of RCA Records. BMG Victor was then distributor for Motown in Japan. The disc was made by Victor-JVC.
that is great information so how rare is it to see something like this that seems to be purely Japanese through and through would you expect the manufacturing to be top notch that and this is the first time ive seen a japanese 80s motown cd
paid about 60 USD near mint from my Tokyo based cd dealer as far as i can see there is only one other copy on sale by a questionable seller in china
