This is to discuss, contemplate, query, investigate, and converse on All Things Bob Dylan; song lyrics, band members, current news, factoids, interviews, articles, stories, and open-ended dialogues.

    I dig Dylan ---- ...

I'll start by saying that I regularly comb through that Columbia box set, which is only rivaled by the Miles Davis set in terms of documenting an evolution of artistry. I can't get enough of it. Last week on my morning commute, it was Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, yesterday was Planet Waves, this morning was Shot of Love. I only wish they sold a cardboard sleeve version of Shadows In the Night to place in that box with the rest of his works.

The only other set that gets equal play is that complete Basement Tapes set . . . I love it . . .

Comedian Bill Hicks had a Dylan bit, I'll quote here:

"The club has a better stereo than I do..I can actually hear the words on a soundsystem
like this. So I brought my Dylan tapes to listen to here. Wow! Did you know he sings?
Opened up a whole new world for me! All these years I've been buying Dylan albums,
just hearing D/C chord - D/C chord. What the hell do people see in this guy? Now I can hear.
There's lyrics! Some quite profound. I think he might have potential..."

If I had to guess, I'd say about 25% of the time I put on an SACD or LP these days, it will be one or another from Dylan's catalog.

I wasn't always a big fan. I didn't really like the early stuff for the longest time. When he plugged in . . . I began to really like him. That was four decades ago! Planet Waves and New Morning and Blood on the Tracks and The Basement Tapes. . . I bought these when they were released and that sealed the deal for me. I've been enjoying all the music ever since.

I'd appreciate the poseur a lot more if he would just shut up -- Joni Mitchell fan.

Back in the 60s and 70s when I actually took some time to listen to him,
I liked his singing voice, not to mention his hit songs.

What a relief! So glad to see this thread. Ol' Bob certainly doesn't get any appreciation around here.

Now if only someone here would show some appreciation for that Paul McCartney guy...and that band he was in back in the 60s...

Dylan's catalog is so vast and varied that there is always something new to discover or appreciate. It bugs me when people call him a poet because to my mind that almost diminishes his talent. He's more a songwriter, musician or performer with a world-view unlike any other. I honestly feel lucky that I am around at the time he's making music.

So many fine albums to mention, 2 of my favourites are 'No Mercy ' and 'Blood on the tracks '
And the 'Tell Tale Signs ' collection is one of his greatest realises, can't believe they're outtakes.

I'm with ya on all of 'em except BIABH. On the electric side (his first), he had yet to find that "thin wild mercury" sound which would reach full bloom on H-61 & BoB. And the Outlaw Blues/On the Road Again/Bob Dylan's 115th Dream troika used to make me wish for a skip button long before CD players were invented. Love the acoustic side, of course.

Bob, not Elvis, is the King. But he's the most fidgety, quirky damn monarch in the firmament.

What's the deal with his appearance on the 2nd to last Letterman show? He sings while pacing around the microphone, grimacing like he's got gallstones and either holding up his trousers by shoving his right hand inside his shirt or pretending that he's Napoleon.

Makes the late Joe Cocker seem like the angel of serenity.

    What gives?

It always sounds missionary to say something like that, but: how should anyone better him? To put it another way: is there ONE songwriter who doesn't admire him?

If you're limiting it to five, I'd remove JWH.
