Just listening to Toronto. Solid Rock is really great - the intro and outro are right on, and the stuff in between is great!

On the basis that many of the clearly religious songs are dealing with new &/or refound love - i.e. what discovering love means to the author (love of God/Jesus/the fellow saved brethren & even learning to like/love himself again)- I'd say that Heart Of Mine fits firmly in that theme & probably should have gone on.

My eyes aren't what they used to be either. There's a good tracklist at superdeluxe edition with info about each track. I found it useful when making backup copies and it may suit your needs.

I played through this 'Sampler' set again after having listed to the 2CD set a few times in between and realized that a good bit of the material on this playlist are tracks that are exclusive to the Deluxe Edition. The Caribbean Wind Rehearsal w Pedal Steel is the track that make me stop and go wait a minute. I had just assumed it was a sampler of the regular retail 2 disc release.

I actually think the one-disc sampler is a better release than the two-disc regular edition!

Bob doing an "old song" the night before the released Earl's Court concert.

That would be very nice to have in the quality of the Earl's Court set on BS13.

It’s weird but this sounds like an outtake from Time out of Mind.

There are rare moments for me when everything sort of come together while listening to music. Those moments transforms me to another place and totally captivates my attentions and emotions. One such moment on this set is the version of What can I do for you on disc 6 from the Toronto gigs. The song itself with it s naked and honest description of faith has always been a favourite of mine from Dylans gospel years. And this version really nails it. Dylans warm and inviting vocals blends perfectley with the voices of the gospelsingers creating a true, churchy feel and the two harmonica solos well-I challenge anyone to find any better coming from Bob. It seems that the gospel singers challenge him to find notes even he wasn t aware of. As a nonbeliever this track almost suceed in convering me-it s a very spiritual moment showing what the real power of music can do
This track alone for me is as powerful and seductive as music can be. It just doesn t get better than this
    Heavenly stuff indeed.:)

Best Bootleg Series since Vol. 8. What a treat. The Toronto gig is splendid.

  14. I agree but my favourite performance from Toronto (and there are so many) is "When He Returns". He completely nails the song here; my favourite performance of the song now.

Is it known why specifically the June 27, 1981 Earl's Court concert was selected for release? What makes this particular one special? Looking at all these audio cassette tapes there was a lot to choose from.

Yep I like Saved (a flawed execution of a great bunch of songs) and Under the Red Sky is a fun album. Knocked Out Loaded is better than nowt but an oddly executed album again.

I do not know but it may be that they had good tapes of the Earls Court shows. I think these shows were recorded with all the gear needed. Amongst Dylan fans I know and most of us went to all 6 nights and have all the tapes made by audience members this June 27th night is regarded as the best in terms of performance. I prefer the Earls Court to Avignon which Sony/Dylan must also have a proper recording of.

  18. I think Clinton Heylin might also have had something to do with it? He clearly rates it as the best Earls Court show.

I have yet to hear a version of When he returned that I don t find great. It s really awesome to watch him perform it in the film.
When he return might be-together with Every Grain of sand-the finest song from Bobs gospel era. Also perhaps the finest vocal performance ever from Dylan.
However What can I do for you is a different listening expence with the band, the choir and harmonicasolos
We are lucky they are both there so we don t have to choose between them

In the box set's booklet only the soundboard cassettes are displayed. This show, as the most of the 1981 concerts, was recorded on eight track reels. It's displayed also a soundboard cassette from this concert. It's possible maybe that unlike other 1981 shows soundboard cassettes were readily available for reference purposes. I doubt that they have transferred and mixed all the 1981 reels for this release.

Here's a question...the Toronto Solid Rock that I mentioned earlier is listed as being from April 20th. The soundboard of April 20th has the same spoken intro, but a different performance of the song. On the soundboard recording that I have, there is a definite change in sound or a short cut between Dylan's talking and the song starting, so it could be from a different night. I know that (apparently) a couple of other bits on the latest DVDs of this show to circulate are patched from the 19th, but now I'm curious if in fact it's a lot more than just some patches and is in fact entire songs.

    Any thoughts?

I definitely find some part on this set to be among the finest concert recordings from Dylan I ever heard. But my wiew if this might be a bit unorthodox. My favourite Dylan live album actually is the take no prisoner craziness that Hard Rain consists of. There is a naked honesty and despair on that album. The glorious takes of You're a big girl now and Idiot Wind is proof . The same honesty and commitment I find in spades on the recent set to. The rare moments when Dylan is not playing roles but takes of his mask. I'd experienced this in person a few times with Bob-one in 2000 -flat out one ofthe best concert of my life and -lot and behold-in April this year when Dylan's phrasing and commitment to songs like Autum leaves were mindblowin
This new set definitively rank among those above as Dylan at the top the of his game
