I can speculate on a few reasons. #1 - They wanted to tie it loosely to the "Lost On The River" project, an opportunity that would have been lost if "Blood" came first. #2 - They recently got access to tapes that they hadn't anticipated, leading to a re-think. #3 - The EU public domain clock is a distant but constant consideration. In 39 more months the unreleased Basement material would have gone public domain if not issued. That passage of time would have required, if nothing else, a "copyright extension" release ahead of a wider release - clearly not an optimal marketing choice.

These are the reels compiled by Robbie Robertson and engineer Rob
Frabioni from the original basement reels and other sources in
preparation for the official 1975 double-set on Columbia. The 44 tracks
comprised mostly Dylan originals with a smattering of cover versions
recorded at Woodstock. Presumably these represent songs short-listed for
the LP, which originally had been talked about as a three-record set
before being scaled down to the now familiar double LP including tracks
by the Band having nothing to do with the Dylan basement sessions.
The tracks were panned in in their original stereo format before being
mixed to either mono or mostly narrow stereo for the LP. Portions of
these reels have been sourced for later bootleg releases.

If that's true, and it's entirely plausible, I wonder how long this set has been in the works. I mean, it doesn't seem like something that they could very easily start and finish in a couple months after deciding to postpone the one they had been working on. Maybe it was near-completion, they needed something to put out, and they decided to finish this one up. If it weren't for it being so close to BOTT's anniversary, I wonder when this would have actually been released. Maybe this was #12?

I would guess that the latter two will have their stereo debuts, so are 'restored'. Possibly MB and SF only exist in the mono versions already released. INT will again use the stereo mix (possibly modified though), as previously released.

They better hurry up - Jan 1975(!) -- no way they get this out in Jan 2015. Maybe fall 2015?

As great as everything else about the 1967 Woodstock tapes is, the original session engineering on his voice stands out compared to his previous recordings on Columbia. There is a great warmth that we don't always hear on the 1962-66 recordings, despite having access to state of the art equipment in NY and Nashville.

I'm looking forward to this set (I pre-ordered the 6-disc version) because I'm hoping it will reveal something new to me.

My three least-played Dylan albums (excluding live albums) are Blonde On Blonde, John Wesley Harding and The Basement Tapes. I like Blonde On Blonde but I don't listen to it much. I like John Wesley Harding for a few songs but I find the album drags too much for me. The Basement Tapes has never clicked with me (despite having an original vinyl copy, a sold long ago original CD copy, the 2009 remastered copy and the one in the Complete Albums box). I just never grab this one off the shelf. Maybe this new configuration will do the trick for me.

I suspect this is it. Once they GOT THE GOODS, The Basement Tapes were bumped to the head of the line.

I don't know if this has come up yet, but I guess this release means that for now at least Shadows in the Night is nixed or postponed? Anyone know?

I fear the historic value of "Lost on a River" is being vastly overlooked. I mean, even if people don't care for the artists involved or the specific interpretations, these are previously unknown Dylan lyrics that were written at his absolute peak.

It was supposed to be released three days ago! Rumors have suggested it was delayed until early next year. Frankly, I was expecting an officially unannounced 8/22 download only release.

A shame--not that I'm unhappy about the Basement release, of course. But new material--or at least new recordings--are still welcome things!

What will happen, I am certain, is that everyone will make their own playlists from the tracks on the six discs. On the other hand, the 2-disc set might satisfy that need for other people.

Wow. Funny how opinions differ. I see 1966-67 as the pinnacle of his recording career, as well as his peak as a songwriter.

It's funny. I agree with this (though I'd expand it to 1965). But I also think that if Dylan's career began post ASP, he'd still legitimately be regarded as rock's greatest songwriter.

Looking at the 12 songs preceding Million Dollar Bash (which was clearly intended as a demo), using the "new" Garth Hudson recording sequence, it appears that Dylan was, finally, trying to come up with some new useable songs, taking a detour only for a few old folk standards, after all the cover versions and stoner-silliness earlier on.

    "One Man's Loss"
    "Lock Your Door"
"Baby, Won't You Be My Baby"
    "Try Me Little Girl"
    "I Can't Make it Alone"
    "Don't You Try Me Now"
"Young but Daily Growing" (Traditional, arranged by Bob Dylan)
"Bonnie Ship the Diamond" (Traditional, arranged by Bob Dylan)
"The Hills of Mexico" (Traditional, arranged by Bob Dylan)
"Down on Me" (Traditional, arranged by Bob Dylan)
    "One for the Road"
    "I'm Alright"

Just the RAW version for me as I am a casual Dylan fan. I own none of the Bootleg series but this one interests me.

There's a quality one on the net I saw last week, uncropped.

The uncropped one reveals those bright spotlights they use for filming,
basically like the ones Dylan had on stage for the 1966 tour films.

So, in other words....Dylan was filming stuff in 1967.
What was he playing and filming...and where are those home movies?
